Netanyahu orders army to prepare for full West Bank closure after attack

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the army to prepare for a full closure of the occupied West Bank Friday after Israeli soldiers shot and killed two men who the military said had launched a "terror attack" near the city of Hebron. Emergency services said five people were injured and evacuated to hospitals.

Israeli soldiers shot and killed two men who the military said had launched an attack near the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank on Friday morning. At least five people were injured, including some critically.

A few hours later, Israel ordered the army to prepare for a full closure of the West Bank. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it instructed security forces to immediately cordon off the city of Hebron and prepare to fully close all of the West Bank, starting Friday.

Earlier, the army said it prevented a "terror attack against Israeli civilians” and that the gunmen carried an M16 rifle and a handgun. It did not elaborate on the target of the alleged attack. There was also no word on the identities of the two dead and those injured.

The article says there was no word on the identities of the two dead and never says they were Palestinians. Palestinian media had named them as Mohammad Jaaba and Firas Jaaba, both 27 and from Hebron. Without this, a reader is left thinking the dead are unidentified.

How we know

The military subsequently set up roadblocks and closures in Palestinian towns in the area.

Emergency responders said five people were injured, some critically, and were being evacuated to hospitals in Israel. A statement from the responders said gunfire was still ongoing as they arrived at the scene of the attack near the Yehuda Junction in the morning.

Two men in their 20s had gunshot wounds to their lower limbs, one was unconscious and seriously injured, the responders said.

“We arrived at a difficult scene while shooting was still taking place in the area," said Tzuriel Edri with the response team.

An investigation was under way, authorities said.

The deadly shooting comes as Israeli voters will decide next Tuesday whether to grant Benjamin Netanyahu yet another term as prime minister – or usher in a new era of Israeli politics. The election comes three years after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel that triggered the war in Gaza.

Israel's government has warned of potential attacks by the country's “enemies” in the lead-up to the election.

On Friday, Israel's far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, known for extremist views, said that the Hebron attack shows that Israel needs to restrict the Palestinians' freedom of movement in the West Bank.

Ahead of the anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack that triggered the war, Netanyahu said the Palestinian militant group could attack Israel in a bid to influence the outcome of the elections. He did not provide evidence to back up the claim.

France 24 writes that Israeli soldiers shot and killed two men near Hebron, keeps the army's "terror attack" label attributed, and notes that Netanyahu gave no evidence for his Hamas claim. Its weaknesses are small. Israeli voices fill the quotes while no Palestinian living under the closure is heard, and it says there was no word on who the dead were when Palestinian media had named them.

““The lives of the residents of Judea and Samaria, of the settlers, the lives of the soldiers, the lives of the police officers, the lives of our fighters are a million times more important than freedom of movement,” he said.”

    Why this matters
France 24 gives Ben-Gvir a full quote arguing for curbs on Palestinian movement. It also quotes an Israeli emergency responder and Netanyahu's office. No Palestinian is quoted at all, although the closure falls on Palestinian towns.
    The impression it gives
The reader hears why Israeli officials want the West Bank sealed, and only Israeli accounts of the day.
    The context
Other coverage of the same day reached Palestinian eyewitnesses in Hebron. They described iron gates on every entrance to the city, raids on nearby towns and seized camera footage. France 24 reduces this to a single line about roadblocks.

    What is missing

What it gets right

  • “Israeli soldiers shot and killed two men who the military said had launched a "terror attack"”

It names who did the killing and keeps the army's label for the dead in the army's mouth.

  • “It did not elaborate on the target of the alleged attack.”

It tells the reader the army's claim about the target is unexplained, and calls the attack alleged.

  • “He did not provide evidence to back up the claim.”

It refuses to let Netanyahu's pre-election warning about Hamas stand unchallenged.
