(Image: Getty) Millions of pensioners rely on their State Pension to cover everyday costs, but should they be given their money a week early to help pay for Christmas?

With Christmas just weeks away, many households will be thinking about how much they need to spend on food, presents and other festive essentials. For pensioners who depend on their State Pension, having the money arrive earlier could make it easier to get their Christmas shopping done. But it could also mean having to make the same payment last longer before the next one arrives. Under current Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) rules, the State Pension is usually paid every four weeks into a bank or building society account.

Those with numbers ending between 00 and 19 are paid on a Monday, while those ending between 20 and 39 receive their money on a Tuesday. Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT But that is different from giving pensioners their money a full week earlier to help with Christmas spending. Some may welcome the extra time to buy presents, organise food shopping and prepare for the festive period.

Others may prefer to keep their normal payment date, particularly if receiving the money early means waiting longer until their next payment. The DWP has previously warned that bringing payments forward unnecessarily could leave people having to stretch their money over a longer period. So, should State Pension payments be made a week early before Christmas, or should the current arrangements stay as they are? About this analysis

The Daily Express asks whether the State Pension should be paid a week early before Christmas, and it sets out how payment dates normally work and how bank holidays move them. It gives the case for and against an early payment and attributes the warning about stretching money to the DWP. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “But that is different from giving pensioners their money a full week earlier to help with Christmas spending.”

The article separates the normal bank holiday rule from the week-early idea it is asking about. A reader does not come away thinking an early payment has been announced.

  • “The DWP has previously warned”

The warning about stretching money over a longer period is attributed to the DWP, not stated in the outlet's own voice.
