States of emergency have been declared across Florida and Alabama , while mandatory evacuations and school closures have been triggered in some areas. Ahead of the storm, oil and gas producers shut down a significant share of offshore production in the Gulf, with about 25 per cent of the oil production in the region temporarily halted as of Wednesday. The National Weather Service told communities from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to Gulf County, Florida, to prepare for the possibility of “long-duration power outages.” Developing more than four months into the season, Isaias nearly ties a 121-year-old record for the latest-forming first Atlantic hurricane.
