Trump says return to war with Iran 'highly unlikely'

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.3 findings

WASHINGTON — President Trump revealed Sunday it is “highly unlikely” that the US will resume the war in Iran as long as talks over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program continue to make progress. “It depends on whether or not they sign a very strong agreement,” Trump told during a phone interview . “The answer is highly unlikely it’s going to be necessary. They’re a failing nation. It just came out, you saw this year, 301% inflation. Highly unlikely it will be necessary.”

“So it’s highly unlikely I’ll have to,” he went on. “They’re withering away financially. We’ve hit them militarily. ” 4 President Donald Trump speaks in front of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, Monday, Nov. 2, 2026. Left out here: Drops what it reported before

The article never says that US forces struck Iranian air defences on Qeshm Island in the days before Trump's interview. The Post reported those strikes the day before. Without them, a reader of 'return to war' and 'resume the military campaign' believes US attacks on Iran have stopped, when the US had just hit Iranian territory.

The New York Post relays President Trump's CNN remarks on Iran, and its headline loosens his condition from signing a strong agreement to merely continuing talks. The Post closes on Trump's threat to 'finish them off' with no Iranian reply, and it leaves out the US strikes on Qeshm Island that it reported the day before.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

“as long as sides continue negotiations”

    Why this matters
The headline makes Trump's condition 'as long as sides continue negotiations', as if talking alone keeps war off the table.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes Trump has ruled out renewed war for as long as talks simply go on.
    The context
Trump made it depend on Iran signing 'a very strong agreement'. Even the Post's own first line conditions it on talks that 'continue to make progress'. The headline drops both conditions.

  2. One side gets the space

    Minor

    “We could finish them off.”

    Why this matters
The Post closes Trump's run of quotes, including 'failing nation' and 'withering away financially', on a threat to 'finish them off', and gives Iran no reply.
    The impression it gives
A reader sees only Washington's account of Iran's weakness and of the talks, with Tehran voiceless.
    The context
Same-day coverage reported that Iran has said it would strike US and Israeli targets if attacked, and that it says its nuclear programme is needed for energy. The article carries no Iranian voice at all.
