What to know today NEW U.S. STRIKES: U.S. Central Command said it had completed a second day of strikes on Iran "to further degrade Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping and innocent civilian mariners in the Strait of Hormuz." Iran said it responded by attacking U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. NATO SUMMIT: President Donald Trump capped the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, by saying the ceasefire with Iran is over and warning that the U.S. might launch more attacks on the Islamic Republic. He also said the U.S. was reimposing its naval blockade. TALKS IN DOUBT: Trump characterized further negotiations with Iran as "a waste of time," adding that he wasn't sure whether he wanted to reach a peace agreement with Tehran. "Let’s just finish the job," he said at a news conference at the end of the summit. SUMMIT TENSIONS: During the summit, Denmark’s leader vowed to defend Greenland after Trump said again that the Arctic territory “should be controlled by the United States.” Trump also said he wanted to halt U.S. trade with Spain amid tensions over the country's level of defense spending and the Iran war. UKRAINE DEFENSE: Trump told reporters during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today that they would discuss allowing Patriot missiles to be made in Europe for Ukraine's air defense against Russia. The American military said it hit around 90 targets in airstrikes across Iran, hours after President Donald Trump said he considered the tenuous ceasefire between the two countries over following Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran retaliated with attacks on three Gulf states — a wave of strikes that sparked alerts in U.S. allies Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait — as the two sides accused each other of violating the terms of their interim deal. Read the full story here. 8d ago / 3:55 AM EDT Syrian officials say Trump has begun process of removing Syria from list of state sponsors of terrorism The Syrian minister of foreign affairs posted a photo on X showing him and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on a plane, displaying what appears to be a directive from Trump ordering Syria’s removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. “Dear Mr. President, Today, I have notified Congress of my decision to rescind the State Sponsor of Terrorism designation for Syria,” the Trump-signed document reads, noting that Congress now has 45 days to review it. The White House did not immediately respond to an NBC News inquiry as to whether the document is authentic. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier on X that Trump had informed Congress of his intention to rescind Syria’s designation. Trump also raised the possibility during a meeting with Sharaa today on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey. No seafarer should have to risk their life simply for doing their job,” said Arsenio Dominguez, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization. Global trade is powered by about 2 million seafarers, many of them from Asian countries, including India and the Philippines, who spend much of their time away from home. At the height of the Iran war in March, 20,000 seafarers were trapped on about 2,000 vessels, the agency said at the time. “This is not simply a matter of shipping statistics. Speaking aboard Air Force One last night, Trump insisted that Iran "wanna make a deal so badly," even after Washington accused Tehran of launching attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a back-and-forth series of attacks from both sides. "They called a little while ago," he said. "I just don’t know that they’re worthy of making a deal. I don’t know that they’re going to honor the deal," Trump continued. "That’s the problem." Asked why Tehran would attack commercial vessels amid the ongoing ceasefire with the U.S., Trump responded, "because they're sort of crazy, to be honest with you ... The price of U.S. crude oil jumped as high as $76 per barrel in the wake of Trump’s comments, its largest one-day increase since the beginning of June. It closed the day higher by 4.4% at $73.52 per barrel, bringing its two-day gain to more than 7%.
