(Image: Getty) Donald Trump was forced into a dramatic mid-flight aircraft swap during a stopover in the UK following a "credible threat" from Iranian proxy forces targeting the US President, reports have revealed. Intelligence officials detected an imminent plot involving a potential missile attack against the US leader as he departed the NATO summit in Turkey earlier this month. The shocking revelations explain why the White House took rapid precautionary action to switch jets while en route back to Washington. Mr Trump had initially arrived in Ankara on board a newly donated Qatari Boeing 747-8 . However, the Secret Service urgently advised him to switch back to the legacy Air Force One jet before departing, according to a new report from the New York Times . The new Qatari jet - which has faced intense scrutiny - lacks the specialised defensive systems installed on the primary, older Air Force One aircraft. Bush - is a military-grade airborne command post equipped with full missile countermeasure systems and EMP hardening (specialised electrical shielding that prevents nuclear or high-tech electronic attacks from frying onboard computers). The newer Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar in 2025 and deployed in July 2026 offers modern luxury and longer range, but currently lacks the older jet's advanced defensive capabilities. Both aircraft landed at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk for an unscheduled pitstop on the night of July 8. It was there that the US President resumed his journey home on board the newly gifted jet, having flown the leg from Turkey aboard the legacy plane. While at the UK military base, Mr Trump dismissed claims that security fears triggered the stopover, claiming the legacy aircraft was used "for old time's sake" and that the stop was arranged so US service members in Britain could tour the new presidential plane. Posting on Truth Social at the time, Mr Trump wrote: "To honor our brave men and women of the Military, we are sending the brand new, and truly spectacular, Air Force One to Mildenhall Air Force Base, in the United Kingdom, to give them a chance to tour the Aircraft..." Sources confirmed the Secret Service stepped in after receiving intelligence regarding a plan by Iranian -backed proxies to fire a missile at the aircraft. Officials clarified that intelligence indicated the proxy forces were targeting Mr Trump directly, regardless of which plane he was on. Asked by reporters during the journey if he was aware of direct threats to his flight, Mr Trump admitted: "I have a threat all the time. I'm number one on their list." The revelations come as tensions between Washington and Tehran reach boiling point following the breakdown of recent ceasefire talks. Mr Trump has warned of "major military punishment" against Tehran and its Houthis in Yemen, revealing he previously issued standing orders to "destroy" Iran at unprecedented levels should Tehran attempt to execute threats against his life. Speaking at the White House on Friday, Mr Trump signalled he remains ready for action, remarking: "We are talking to them... but we're locked and loaded . We're ready to go."
