LBC reports that a man in his 20s was killed in Mill Hill, north London, when a tree brought down by high winds fell on his moving car, with statements from the Met Police and London Ambulance Service. The report is plain and attributed. Its one flaw is that it gives two times that do not fit together: the tree is said to have fallen at 12.40pm, but the ambulance service says it was called at 12.29pm.

  1. Contradictory timings

    Minor

    “at around 12.40pm on Sunday”

    Why this matters
LBC states in its own voice that the tree came down at around 12.40pm.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes 12.40pm as the time the tree fell on the car.
    The context
The ambulance service quoted later in the same article says it was called to the incident at 12.29pm, eleven minutes before the time LBC gives. Metro gives the time as 12.40am. The article never reconciles the two, so a reader cannot tell when the man was killed.

What it gets right

  • “A man in his 20s has been killed in north London when a tree fell on his car, according to the Metropolitan Police.”

It says plainly that the man was killed and how, and it attributes the account to the police.

  • “High winds brought down the tree onto the man's vehicle”

It names the cause of the tree's fall rather than leaving it as an unexplained collapse.
