Iran braces for possible new conflict with US and Israel despite diplomatic talks

Iran's President and the Emir of Qatar, in Moscow, on October 27, 2026. IRAN'S PRESIDENTIAL WEBSITE/WANA VIA REUTERS In Tehran, the possibility of a renewed military escalation involving Iran, Israel and the United States is no longer just a hypothetical scenario. It has become a real prospect, openly discussed by Iranian officials and factored into the country's strategic calculations. Iranian authorities have signaled their readiness for the potential resumption of hostilities, all the while maintaining diplomatic contacts in an effort to prevent it.

On Wednesday, October 28, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on the country's executive bodies to maintain a constant state of readiness "to face the country's changing circumstances." "All ministers, directors and deputy heads of executive agencies are required to remain fully prepared, and depending on the situation, to make management and cost reduction a priority," he said during a cabinet meeting. His call came amid heightened tensions and fears that airstrikes could resume.

During the same meeting, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtchi discussed recent consultations aimed at preventing a new escalation, particularly with Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey – the three signatories to the Mecca Defense Pact signed in August – as well as Qatar. Talks have focused on regional security and the possibility of a provisional agreement brokered by Qatar and Pakistan. Pakistan's army chief, Asim Munir, also visited Iran on October 20.

What it gets right

  • “Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on the country's executive bodies to maintain a constant state of readiness "to face the country's changing circumstances."”

Le Monde names the Iranian president and reports his words as his own, without adding an unseen motive.

  • “Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtchi discussed recent consultations aimed at preventing a new escalation”

Le Monde reports Iran's diplomatic effort to prevent escalation as a fact attributed to a named minister, so Iran's side is not reduced to military readiness alone.
