The offer was more than double the £1,790 put up by the local council for the same property to house social housing tenants . The Sun understands Clearsprings is targeting landowners who typically rent to students or local authorities, as well as people fleeing domestic abuse . But Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “It is a day of shame for Labour that hard-working Brits are being kicked out of flats so they can be let out at twice the price for illegal immigrants.” One landlord, who provides properties to Southwark Council, said he found Clearsprings’ offer “bizarre” because both bids were ultimately taxpayer-funded. He said: “The whole thing is nuts. I was approached earlier this year by Clearsprings Ready Homes. I am not prepared to do that. But many landlords just see it as an opportunity to earn more, and just go with them. Advertisement “Also, the standard that they require is way beyond what we would provide to local authorities or private tenants — and they are meeting those ridiculously high requirements with taxpayers’ money.” Clearsprings Ready Homes has a ten-year deal worth around £7billion to house asylum seekers in southern England and Wales. It is one of three companies with a lengthy Home Office contract, alongside Serco and Mears Group. 6 Clearsprings is run by so-called ‘Asylum King’ Graham King, who has a net worth of £726million Credit: Not known, clear with picture desk 6 A house being converted into an HMO was attacked Credit: Jason Bye Advertisement But Reform UK’s Robert Jenrick said last night: “This is everything that’s wrong with broken Britain. “The Government is spending millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money to roll out the red carpet for illegal migrants, while leaving domestic abuse victims as afterthoughts. “It’s outrageous and under a Reform government this racket will end once and for all. “We will put veterans and abuse victims first for housing.” A document seen by The Sun and sent to landlords shows Clearsprings is planning to find more homes in hotspot areas. Advertisement Potential locations include Bedford , Southampton, the Forest of Dean, Caerphilly and Wrexham . It also states that prospective homes often need refurbishment to meet exacting standards. The Southwark landlord, who asked not to be identified, said: “It all seems very over the top. 6 Chris Philp said: ‘It is a day of shame for Labour that hard-working Brits are being kicked out of flats so they can be let out at twice the price for illegal immigrants’ Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 6 Robert Jenrick said: ‘The Government is spending millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money to roll out the red carpet for illegal migrants’ Credit: Getty Advertisement “They want them pretty much fully redecorated and new carpets — which doesn’t make any sense if you urgently need a good, council- approved house to give a roof to people who need it. “My HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) flats have all been approved by council officers, even if decorations are not matching. “Why are these standards applying to migrants and not to families at risk of homelessness?” Clearsprings is run by so-called “Asylum King” Graham King , who has a net worth of £726million. King, 66, founded the company in 1999 and has provided housing for asylum seekers since 2000. Advertisement The firm, which manages HMO accommodation, hotels and former military camps for the Home Office, is responsible for housing around 30,000 migrants, estimates show. Company accounts filed last November show Clearsprings made a profit of £62.6million in the year to January 2025 on a turnover of almost £1.4billion. More than 220,000 migrants have arrived by small boat since 2018. For years they were mostly housed in costly hotels, but Home Office officials have closed more than 100 and moved residents to HMO properties and disused Army bases . The Home Office said: “We pay a capped and contractually agreed rate to accommodation providers. Advertisement “Any amount above that is covered by the contractor and not taxpayers. We are working to fairly house asylum seekers across the country and closing every hotel, saving taxpayers over £1billion on asylum support since the election.” RECOMMENDED STORIES It also said it had removed 80,000 people with no right to be in the UK since the election. Clearsprings Ready Homes and Southwark Council were also asked to comment. 132 comments 132
