GB News reports that Clive Lewis and Lara Bird say Israel held them for eight hours and turned them away from the West Bank, and it quotes both MPs at length. In its own voice the outlet never calls the West Bank occupied or the settlements illegal, though its own earlier reporting said "occupied West Bank". It also calls the 2,000 people displaced in the military operation only "West Bank residents", not Palestinians.

  1. Hedges the documented record

    Serious

“denied access to the West Bank”

    Why this matters
GB News reports that Israel barred British MPs from the West Bank. It never says, in its own voice, that the West Bank is territory Israel occupies.
    The impression it gives
A reader is left to assume Israel is simply controlling its own border, and that being stopped from entering the West Bank is like being refused entry to Israel itself, as S24 frames the earlier case.
    The context
The ICJ found Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful. Israel is controlling entry to occupied territory. GB News itself wrote "occupied West Bank" ten days earlier.

    “sanctions on West Bank settlements”

    Why this matters
The outlet names the settlements as the target of UK sanctions but gives no word on their legal status.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the sanctions as a political choice in a diplomatic row, against ordinary communities.
    The context
The ICJ found Israel's settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law. The only mention of illegality in the article sits inside Lara Bird's quote, so it reads as one MP's opinion.

    • Elsewhere in the article“by the IDF and illegal settlers”

    Written straight

The MPs were stopped from entering the occupied West Bank, whose occupation the International Court of Justice has ruled unlawful. Ed Miliband had sanctioned settlements the court found illegal under international law.

  2. Hides who did it

    Minor

“In a subsequent military operation, around 2,000 West Bank residents have been displaced.”

    Why this matters
The words "have been displaced" take the actor out of the sentence. "West Bank residents" hides that the people driven from their homes were Palestinians.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking 2,000 people of no stated identity were somehow uprooted in the course of an operation, as if displacement simply happened.
    The context
The operation was announced by Netanyahu and carried out by Israeli occupation forces, as the article's previous sentence shows. The BBC reports the displaced were Palestinian residents of Hebron.
