by Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip on Monday, with the Israeli military also announcing it had killed two commanders in the Hamas terror group in earlier attacks, as well as a day prior. The Israel Defense Forces said that one strike on Saturday in Gaza City killed Mohammed Halawa, a Hamas intelligence officer, and another strike on Thursday killed Ahmed Zahir Fuad Abu-Odeh, an engineering officer in the terror group.

“Throughout the war, and particularly recently, the terrorists advanced attacks against IDF troops and Israeli civilians and acted to restore the capabilities of the Hamas terror organization, in systematic violation of the ceasefire,” the IDF said, adding that they were killed to “remove the threat they posed.” Meanwhile, the military said that three Palestinian terror operatives who emerged from a tunnel in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis on Sunday were targeted in an airstrike.

The IDF said the tunnel shaft was located on the western side of the “Yellow Line,” meaning in territory held by Hamas. It is unclear whether the three were killed in the strike, but the IDF said that “hits were identified.” בעקבות התקיפה, זוהו פיצוצי משנה המעידים על הימצאות אמצעי… pic.twitter.com/MpFw4ch2xH — צבא ההגנה לישראל (@idfonline) October 26, 2026 Meanwhile, five Palestinians, including a seven-year-old girl, were killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza on Monday, medical sources and first responders said.

Three of the deaths were reported in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. In response to a query, the IDF said it was “unaware” of any military activity in al-Mawasi on Monday. (Omar AL-QATTAA/AFP) Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis said the three killed in al-Mawasi “were torn apart by direct hits from shrapnel from the Israeli missile,” adding that several wounded people, including a child and a woman, had also been brought in for treatment.

The hospital identified the dead as Hossam al-Zamli, Tamer Abu Sneima and Jouri al-Soufi. Gaza’s . After a US-brokered ceasefire took hold in Gaza in October 2025, the so-called Yellow Line was established to divide the areas under Israeli control — now some 63 percent of the territory — from those under Hamas control. The military advance on Monday coincided with “heavy gunfire” by the IDF “toward the eastern and northern areas” of Deir al-Balah, home to hundreds of displaced families, the source added. Advertisement Israel in recent months has , saying they posed a threat to Israeli forces.

According to the military, many of the recent strikes focused on Hamas operatives involved in building up the terror group’s force and civil control mechanisms in the Strip. Hamas reportedly told a UN official earlier this month that it was prepared to carry out an October 7-style attack in Israel, the West Bank or abroad, following the IDF’s expansion past the Gaza ceasefire line and the Palestinian Authority’s cancellation of legislative elections in November.

Implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza has stalled, with Hamas refusing to disarm and Israel refusing to withdraw from any part of Gaza until that condition is met. (Courtesy of Derech Tkuma) Meanwhile, a drone flown from Israel toward the Gaza Strip overnight was downed by troops, the military said Monday morning. The IDF said the drone was brought down over Israeli territory, near Kibbutz Nahal Oz.

It was later found to be carrying a large payload of suspected drugs. The drone appeared to be a DJI Flycart or similar heavy-duty model, capable of carrying large payloads of dozens of kilograms. There have also been an unknown number of smuggling attempts from Israel into Gaza using drones since the start of the October 2025 ceasefire. According to the IDF, suspects on the Israeli side load up drones with weapons or drugs and fly them over the border into Gaza.

The Times of Israel hedges the Palestinian dead at every turn, with "said killed", "reportedly", "could not independently verify", "alleged Israeli fire" and "Hamas-run", while it relays the military's claims about the men it killed without any such caveat. In its own voice it calls the people the army struck "terror operatives" and "terrorists", resting only on the military's word. Its headline also drops the actor from the five killings.

  1. Labels people on one side's word

    Severe

“striking three terror operatives who emerged from a tunnel”

    Why this matters
In its own voice the outlet calls the three people struck "terror operatives".
    The impression it gives
It is established that the three were armed fighters.
    The context
The only basis is the military's statement. The article does not even know whether the three survived, and gives no independent account of who they were.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“the military said that three Palestinian terror operatives who emerged from a tunnel”
    • Elsewhere in the article“It is unclear whether the three were killed in the strike”

    Show it in the article

“increasingly targeted terror operatives in Gaza, including numerous terrorists who took part in the Hamas-led October 7 atrocities”

    Why this matters
The outlet states in its own voice that the people Israel has been killing are "terror operatives" and "terrorists" who took part in 7 October.
    The impression it gives
The people killed in Israel's recent strikes are confirmed fighters and 7 October attackers.
    The context
The next sentence shows the source is the military. The outlet's own earlier report found that a recent strike killed university administrative staff and wounded students.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

  2. Doubts one side's dead and not the other's

    Serious

    “5 Palestinians said killed”

    Why this matters
The headline marks the five Palestinian deaths as hearsay with "said killed", then states "IDF targets two Hamas commanders" with no hedge.
    The impression it gives
The Palestinian deaths are an unconfirmed claim, while the army's account of killing two commanders is solid.
    The context
Hospitals named the dead and described how they died. The article attaches no doubt to the army's claims about who the two men were.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The hospital identified the dead as Hossam al-Zamli, Tamer Abu Sneima and Jouri al-Soufi.”
    • Elsewhere in the article“The Israel Defense Forces said that one strike on Saturday in Gaza City killed Mohammed Halawa”

    Show it in the article

    “Five Palestinians were reportedly killed”

    Why this matters
The lead qualifies the Palestinian deaths with "reportedly". In the same sentence the military is "announcing it had killed two commanders" with no qualifier on who they were.
    The impression it gives
The army's identification of the dead men is fact, and the deaths of the five Palestinians are uncertain.
    The context
Both accounts come from one party each. Only the Palestinian one is hedged, although Nasser Hospital gave the dead by name and described their wounds.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“were torn apart by direct hits from shrapnel from the Israeli missile”

    Show it in the article

“The Times of Israel could not independently verify the reports.”

    Why this matters
The outlet adds a verification caveat to the Palestinian medical reports only.
    The impression it gives
The Palestinian casualty reports are uniquely doubtful.
    The context
The outlet attaches no such caveat to the army's claims that the men it killed were Hamas intelligence and engineering officers, or that the tunnel trio were operatives.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“another strike on Thursday killed Ahmed Zahir Fuad Abu-Odeh, an engineering officer”

    Show it in the article

    “alleged Israeli fire”

    Why this matters
The word "alleged" casts doubt on who fired, inside a report of 13 dead and about 60 wounded.
    The impression it gives
It is uncertain that Israel did the killing.
    The context
The article itself reports that Israeli strikes killed the five, and Nasser Hospital names an Israeli missile.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“shrapnel from the Israeli missile”
    • Elsewhere in the article“reportedly killed by Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip”

    Show it in the article

“Hamas-run Education Ministry gave al-Soufi’s age as 7”

    Why this matters
The outlet attaches "Hamas-run" to the source of a seven-year-old girl's age.
    The impression it gives
Even the child's age is a partisan claim to be doubted.
    The context
The article itself, in S7, reports a seven-year-old girl among the dead on the word of medical sources. The army's sources are never labelled in this way.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“including a seven-year-old girl, were killed in Israeli attacks”

    Show it in the article

  3. Hides who did it

    Serious

    “killed in Gaza strikes”

    Why this matters
The headline says the five were "killed in Gaza strikes" and names no one who carried out the strikes.
    The impression it gives
The strikes that killed the five are of unclear origin, separate from the IOF action named in the second clause.
    The context
The article's own lead and body say Israeli strikes and Israeli attacks killed them.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“reportedly killed by Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip”
    • Elsewhere in the article“were killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza on Monday”

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Israeli strikes kill 5 Palestinians in Gaza, including a 7-year-old girl; IOF says it killed two Hamas commanders

  4. Hides who did it

    Minor

“buildings damaged during the Israel-Hamas war”

    Why this matters
The caption says the buildings were "damaged during the Israel-Hamas war" and names no one who damaged them.
    The impression it gives
The destruction in Gaza City simply happened in a two-sided war.
    The context
Same-day coverage records Israeli forces demolishing buildings in Gaza City, and the destruction of homes during Israel's war.
