TEHRAN: Iran’s state media reported the sound of explosions in the southern Hormozgan province overlooking the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday.

“A few minutes ago, the sound of several explosions was heard in the Karpan area of Sirik, in Hormozgan Province,” the official IRNA news agency said, without specifying whether the area was targeted by attacks or possible missile launches were carried out from the area.

“Local sources have not yet disclosed the nature of these explosions,” IRNA noted.

The explosions are a first in the area this month, with the war between the US and Iran relatively quiet in recent weeks.

The conflict began in late February, when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, killing the country’s supreme leader, along with senior military commanders.

Iran has attempted to blockade the strategic waterway, demanding all ships seek its authorization to cross. In peacetime, the Hormuz strait carried around a fifth of the world’s oil supplies.

, the United States has imposed a counterblockade on Iranian ports and ships.

What we found (1)

Arab News reports, on IRNA's word, that explosions were heard in the Karpan area of Sirik near the Strait of Hormuz, and it says plainly that their nature is unknown. It names the United States and Israel as the parties who began the war and killed Iran's supreme leader. Its one lapse is minor: in its own voice it calls the US counterblockade "retaliation", which casts only one side as responding.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “In retaliation”

    Why this matters
The words "In retaliation" present the US counterblockade, in the outlet's own voice, as a justified answer to Iran's blockade.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking the US is only responding, while Iran's blockade in S6 is the first move with no cause given.
    The context
The article itself says the war began when the United States and Israel attacked Iran and killed its supreme leader. By that account Iran's blockade also came in response to an attack. Only the US measure is labelled as retaliation, and nothing in the facts supports that difference.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, killing the country’s supreme leader, along with senior military commanders”

The outlet names who started the war and says plainly that the attacks killed Iran's supreme leader and commanders, with no euphemism and no hidden actor.

  • “without specifying whether the area was targeted by attacks or possible missile launches were carried out from the area”

The outlet keeps the report to what IRNA said and does not guess at who caused the explosions or why.
