VED fees increase every year in line with Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation, and 2027 is set to be no different. The Treasury has already confirmed that VED tax bands will rise next spring , making the admission in a document published just hours after John Healey’s Budget last week. The news has allowed experts to analyse the potential impacts, with Pete Barden predicting just how much bills are likely to rise for motorists across the country.

The specialists have indicated that standard VED fees, first-year rates and charges for cars registered between 2001 and 2017 are all set to rise. However, vehicles first registered before 2001 will also be caught up in the changes, with motorists of older vehicles set to pay more to use the roads from next year. Older cars are only exempt from VED rates once they reach 40 years old, meaning cars built between 1987 and 2001 still need to pay.

This will be a £10 increase on the current £230 bills. Although the news will be a blow to road users, price hikes have not increased. A £10 rise will be the exact same rise that hit motorists earlier this year when costs increased from £220 per year. The Treasury report read: “The government will uprate VED rates for cars, vans and motorcycles in line with the Retail Prices Index (RPI) from 1 April 2027.” Standard VED rates for cars registered after 2017 are tipped to increase from £200 to £210.

The Daily Express headlines a routine £10 inflation rise in car tax as Andy Burnham's "new £240 car tax rule change", presenting the whole annual fee as the change. The body itself says VED rises every year in line with RPI and that the increase is £10, so the headline and opening sentence promise a new Burnham policy the article does not describe.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Serious

“new £240 car tax rule change”

    Why this matters
The headline calls a £240 charge a "new" "rule change" and pins it on Andy Burnham by name.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes Burnham has brought in a new £240 car tax rule, or that drivers face a new £240 charge.
    The context
The body reports an automatic annual uprating in line with RPI. The £240 is the whole yearly fee for smaller older cars, and the rise is £10 on the current £230. No new rule is described anywhere in the article.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“VED fees increase every year in line with Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation”
    • Elsewhere in the article“This will be a £10 increase on the current £230 bills.”
    • Elsewhere in the article“uprate VED rates for cars, vans and motorcycles in line with the Retail Prices Index (RPI)”

    Show it in the article

    Written straight

Car tax to rise by £10 for smaller older cars from April 2027 in annual inflation uprating.

  2. Tells the event as something else

    Minor

“Andy Burnham is set to introduce new Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) car tax fees within a matter of months”

    Why this matters
The Express says in its own voice that Burnham will "introduce new" VED fees.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes the Prime Minister is personally bringing in fresh car tax charges.
    The context
The article's own facts describe existing fees uprated by inflation, as happens every year, confirmed in a Treasury document. The same reporter's earlier piece used the same "rule change" framing for van rates it said would stay at £140.
