Efforts continue to restore power after Storm Boelo amid further wind warnings

No framing issues found.

Engineers continued to work on Monday to restore power to some customers who lost supply during Storm Boelo. ESB Networks said a number of homes, farms and businesses remained without electricity in the north-west on Monday afternoon. Around 41,000 properties in the Republic of Ireland were left without power on Sunday morning after the storm swept in from the Atlantic. In Northern Ireland, around 12,500 customers lost supply. On Monday morning, NIE Networks said power has been restored to all those affected.

A series of weather warnings were in place as Storm Boelo hit the island 36 hours after Storm Austen – the first named storm of the season – caused disruption in the southern part of the island. The unsettled weather is set to continue, with Met Éireann having issued a yellow wind warning for eleven counties on Monday evening: Carlow, Clare, Cork , Donegal , Galway , Kerry, Kilkenny, Mayo, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow. In Northern Ireland, a similar Met Office yellow warning will cover counties Antrim and Down.

Preparations have been made to bolster flood defences amid fears of overtopping waves and coastal flooding. On Monday, Dublin City Council flood operations staff blocked gaps in the flood defences on the Clontarf Promenade and erected the flood defences in Sandymount.

About this analysis

The Evening Standard reports power cuts and repair work across the island of Ireland after Storm Boelo, with sourced outage figures and the new wind warnings. Its figures and attributions are sound, and we found nothing to flag in this report.

What it gets right

  • “ESB Networks said a number of homes, farms and businesses remained without electricity”

It names the grid operator as the source for the outage status rather than stating it unsourced.

  • “NIE Networks said power has been restored to all those affected”

It attributes the restoration claim in Northern Ireland to the network operator.

  • “Around 41,000 properties in the Republic of Ireland were left without power on Sunday morning”

It gives a specific figure with a clear place and time, so a reader knows what the number counts.
