Numerous benefits are set to receive a boost over the next couple of months. Chancellor John Healey has vowed to British families that he will "steer us through" the global economic storms with his recent budget. Among measures for hard-pressed Brits, he unveiled £100 payments for millions to assist with energy costs , the scrapping of standing charges on gas bills, and increased levies on banks to help combat the cost-of-living squeeze.

Alongside this announcement, Andy Burnham's government has also boosted a number of benefits for Brits. From pensions enjoying a triple lock boost to increases in PIP payments and UC - here is a list of the benefits which are set to increase this April. The minimum guarantee for Pension Credit is set to rise by 3.9%, in line with earnings growth. Starting in April, it will land at £247.30 a week for single pensioners and £377.40 for a couple.

The savings element of Pension Credit will rise by 3.5%. Pensioners are set to also enjoy the full new State Pension rising by approximately £490 a year. The guarantee ensures payments increase by whichever is highest out of inflation, average wage growth or 2.5%. The full new State Pension will climb to £250.75 a week from April 2027. The full basic State Pension will also increase, with the rise based on the same earnings-linked calculation.

PIP is designed to assist with additional living or mobility costs from a disability. PIP rates are set to rise by 3.5% from April 2027. This benefit supports those above State Pension age who require additional help due to a disability or health condition. Payments are due to increase by 3.5%. People who provide a minimum of 35 hours of care per week to someone in receipt of qualifying disability benefits are eligible to claim Carer's Allowance.

In April, payments will increase by 3.5%. This benefit assists with the additional costs of caring for a disabled kid. Existing claims will enjoy increases in line with relevant benefit uprating rules. Those who fall ill or become disabled as a result of a workplace accident or occupational disease can access this support. These payments will be subject to the annual review and will rise by 3.5%. The Budget announcement confirms the standard allowance will go up, with the Government revealing a single claimant aged 25 or over will pocket around £219 more annually than if the payment had increased just in line with inflation.

For couples where at least one partner is aged 25 or over, the boost will be approximately £344 a year above an inflation-only increase. People raising a kid who have lost both parents may be eligible for this additional support. The applicable rate will rise in line with the annual uprating. The Government has confirmed statutory payments, including sick pay and maternity pay, will increase by 3.5%. The child benefit payment helps assist families with the cost of bringing up children.

The relevant rates are covered by the annual benefit uprating arrangements.

About this analysis

The Daily Star lists the benefits due to rise from April 2027 after Chancellor John Healey's Budget, giving percentages and weekly rates for pensions, PIP, Carer's Allowance and other payments. It states the basis for each rise, earnings, inflation or the annual uprating, and nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “set to rise by 3.9%, in line with earnings growth”

The article gives the size of the rise and the measure it is tied to, so the reader knows where the figure comes from.

  • “around £219 more annually than if the payment had increased just in line with inflation”

The article states the comparison behind the Universal Credit figure, so the reader does not take an above-inflation margin for the whole increase.

  • “has vowed to British families that he will "steer us through"”

The article attributes the Chancellor's promise to him in quotation marks and does not adopt it as its own assessment.
