Reform UK leader of Staffordshire County Council announces shock resignation
The Reform UK leader of Staffordshire County Council has announced his shock resignation, just seven months after taking up the role permanently. Martin Murray has confirmed he is stepping down as both leader of the council and leader of its Reform UK group, saying it is in the best interests of Staffordshire. His departure marks the latest leadership upheaval for Reform UK, which has now had four group leaders since winning control of the council in May 2025.
Former deputy leader Hayley Coles has taken over from Murray. In a lengthy statement, Murray described his resignation as a difficult decision but gave no specific reason for stepping down. "This was a difficult decision, but the interests of Staffordshire, the Council and those we serve must come first," he said. "I do so with a clear conscience and immense pride in what we achieved together." Conservative group leader Councillor Philip White questioned the repeated changes at the top of the council.
"I wish Martin Murray well for the future but it is deeply concerning that Staffordshire County Council - one of the largest local authorities in the country is now on to its fourth Reform UK leader in a year and a half," he said. The party's first council leader, Ian Cooper, resigned in December 2025 after Reform UK revoked his membership following allegations of racist social media comments. Chris Large was subsequently elected Reform group leader in January, but stepped down just days later, citing a family bereavement.
Large had also faced scrutiny over allegedly racist activity on a TikTok account bearing his name, although he denied writing or endorsing the comments. Murray, who had been acting council leader, was formally appointed to the role in March. His resignation means Hayley Coles becomes the fourth person to lead Staffordshire's Reform UK group since December. Murray used his statement to highlight his achievements, including delivering a balanced budget, protecting frontline services and promoting Staffordshire's economy and tourism industry.
"While my time as Leader has come to an end, my commitment to Staffordshire and the people of Cannock remains unchanged," he said. Want a quick and expert briefing on the biggest news stories? Listen to our latest podcasts to find out What You Need To Know...
