- with the Greens senator slamming Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for taking 'selfies with one of the active participants of genocide' during his recent trip to New York. Faruqi made the extraordinary comments on the Senate floor on Tuesday during a fiery sitting where One Nation leader Pauline Hanson condemned both her and independent senator Lidia Thorpe as a 'disgrace'.

Senators Faruqi and Thorpe both sought to suspend parliamentary standing orders and force debate on motions relating to Gaza , with Faruqi accusing the Albanese government of failing to act through what she described as 'three years of genocide'. During a , Faruqi said: 'Three years of Israel 's genocide in Gaza, three years of mass murder of Palestinians, three years of killing more than 21,000 Palestinian children. 'This government can't call these atrocities and war crimes what they really are, which is genocide.'

The Greens senator also targeted Albanese personally, claiming Labor had spent years attempting to silence critics of Israel rather than taking action. 'I've said before that the Prime Minister has never met a billionaire he didn't love,' she said. She then criticised Albanese's recent interactions with US President Donald Trump, while he was in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly earlier this month. Mehreen Faruqi (pictured) accused Anthony Albanese of enabling a genocide in Gaza Mehreen Faruqi slammed the Prime Minister for taking selfies with US President Donald Trump during a recent meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly 'Watching him take selfies with one of the active participants of this genocide,' she said. 'Our government chooses to cosy up with Trump, who is a warmonger whose barbaric ideas include threats to annihilate Iran.'

Liberal senator Andrew Bragg could be heard mocking Faruqi's criticism of Israel and . 'Excellent government in that country,' he said, in reference to Iran's ruling Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which is listed as a terrorist organisation in Australia. The US is Australia's principal ally and the guarantor of its security under the ANZUS treaty.

Faruqi also described Trump as 'a sadistic con artist' and urged the government to 'name the atrocities for what they really are, a genocide'. She called on Labor to expel Israel's ambassador, impose sanctions on Israel and end the two-way arms trade. The Daily Mail heard Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg mocking Faruqi's comments about Iran: 'Excellent government in that country' Pauline Hanson (pictured) said that Faruqi was a 'disgrace' following her speech Shortly afterwards, Senator Thorpe mounted her own bid to suspend standing orders, using much of her speech to accuse the Albanese government of being 'actively complicit' in genocide . 'I'm proposing the suspension of standing orders today because last week marked three years of Israel's genocide against the Palestinian people,' Senator Thorpe said. 'This means three years of relentless, intentional killing, destruction and displacement.

Three years of Israel using starvation as a tool for genocide .' The independent senator claimed Australia was failing to meet its international obligations and accused the government of continuing to support Israel despite the mounting death toll. 'This country is just failing to act in the face of genocide. It is actively complicit in it,' she said. 'It continues to supply weapons parts. That's why this motion is urgent, because this government is supplying weapons to Israel to commit genocide.'

Lidia Thorpe (pictured) said that Australia was 'actively complicit' in 'the act of genocide' Thorpe argued there could be no more pressing issue before Parliament than . 'There could be no more urgent reason to suspend standing orders today and every other day than to act in line with our most fundamental human rights obligation to prevent and stop genocide,' she said. She also warned that failing to hold Israel accountable for 'sets a dangerous precedent' and accused the government of refusing to take meaningful action.

Both senators' motions were ultimately defeated when Labor, the Coalition and One Nation voted against them.

What we found (3)

The Daily Mail reports a Senate sitting where Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi and independent Lidia Thorpe sought debate on Gaza. In its own voice it credits Faruqi with "support for Iran" that nothing she said supports, then places the IRGC's terror listing and two firebomb attacks beside her. It calls Israel's genocide "the conflict in Gaza" and "alleged breaches", and never tells the reader that a UN inquiry found genocide and the ICJ has issued provisional measures.

  1. Smears a named person

    Serious

    “support for Iran”

    Why this matters
The words "support for Iran" state in the Daily Mail's own voice that Faruqi supports Iran, and not as Bragg's jibe.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes Faruqi has backed the Iranian government.
    The context
The only thing Faruqi says about Iran in the article is a criticism of Trump's threats to annihilate it. That is opposition to an attack on a country, not support for its rulers. The article quotes nothing in which she praises or backs Iran's government.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“whose barbaric ideas include threats to annihilate Iran”

    Show it in the article

“Australian authorities have linked the IRGC to the 2024 fire bomb attacks of Sydney's Lewis's Continental Kitchen and Melbourne's Adass Israel Synagogue.”

    Why this matters
The reporter adds, in the outlet's voice, the IRGC's link to firebomb attacks on a synagogue and a kosher restaurant, straight after crediting Faruqi with "support for Iran".
    The impression it gives
A reader links Faruqi to a regime that attacked Jewish targets in Australia, and so to antisemitic violence.
    The context
Nothing Faruqi said concerns the IRGC or these attacks. The chain of support for Iran, then terror listing, then synagogue firebombing rests only on Bragg's sarcastic aside and the outlet's own gloss.

  2. Hedges the documented record

    Serious

    “the conflict in Gaza”

    Why this matters
In its own voice the Daily Mail calls what both senators describe as genocide "the conflict in Gaza".
    The impression it gives
A reader takes the genocide as the senators' rhetoric about a two-sided war, not a documented finding.
    The context
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry found in September 2025 that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. The ICJ has issued provisional measures in the genocide case against Israel. The article reports a debate that turns on genocide and never mentions either.

    “alleged breaches of international law”

    Why this matters
The word "alleged" in the reporter's paraphrase turns Israel's breaches of international law into an unproven charge.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes Israel's violations are an accusation still awaiting proof.
    The context
A UN commission has found genocide, the ICJ has issued provisional measures, and the ICC has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant. These are findings, not allegations.

  3. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“The mere act of meeting Donald Trump is beyond the pale for Mehreen Faruqi”

    Why this matters
The reporter opens in his own voice with a sneer that recasts Faruqi's complaint as outrage at any meeting with Trump.
    The impression it gives
A reader believes Faruqi objects to diplomacy itself.
    The context
In the article's own quotes, her objection is to the Prime Minister cosying up to someone she calls a participant in genocide, not to meeting a US president.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“Our government chooses to cosy up with Trump”

    “lengthy diatribe”

    Why this matters
"Diatribe" labels a senator's Senate speech as a rant in the outlet's voice.
    The impression it gives
A reader dismisses the speech as an outburst rather than an argument for a motion.
    The context
The speech made a case for specific measures: expelling the ambassador, sanctions and ending the arms trade.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“expel Israel's ambassador, impose sanctions on Israel”
