Support us Labour MPs have revolted against Andy Burnham's trans conversion bill amid fears parents could be locked up for asking their child if they really want to change gender. Earlier this week, analysis of the draft Conversion Practices Bill by think tank Policy Exchange concluded that the legislation could "criminalise parents who seek to dissuade children from transitioning".
Now, a group of Labour MPs and peers are scrutinising the law and could request amendments after interviewing witnesses. Steve Yemm, the Labour MP for Mansfield, told The Telegraph he supported banning "abusive and coercive conversion practices", but warned that parents, teachers, and clinicians must be able to have an open discussion with children questioning their gender without the fear of being arrested. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say He said: "Biological sex matters, and legitimate gender-critical beliefs must remain protected.
I welcome the parliamentary scrutiny of the draft bill and hope it will address these concerns. "I remain sceptical, but I have an open mind and would be willing to support legislation that protects people from genuine abuse while safeguarding freedom of belief and appropriate clinical care." Some Labour figures have said they would vote against the bill, including Graham Stringer, Labour MP for Blackley and Middleton South, who said the proposed legislation was a "completely inappropriate thing for the state to be doing".
"I will listen to the debate," he said. "From what I know now, I will vote against it. It seems like a huge intrusion into family life. It seems to be an attack on parents." LGBT+ groups have welcomed the proposals | PA He added: "The consequences of breaching the proposals in the bill are ridiculously punitive." And Mary Glindon, the Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne East and Wallsend, warned that the bill could leave parents "criminally liable" just for offering cautionary advice.
She added that the legislation would undermine "important findings from the Cass Report", and that the language does not "require an intention to cause any harm". "Parents, guardians, and other adults entrusted with caring for vulnerable people must not be put in a position where offering caring or cautionary advice could leave them criminally liable," she said. "Such a destructive and ill-conceived bill should have no place on any Government’s agenda, and I hope No10 wakes up to the issues rather than sleepwalking into a disastrous and unnecessary new law." A spokesman for Labour Women’s Declaration, a gender-critical group, said: "You do not need to be a legal expert to understand very quickly that this draft bill is deeply flawed and we are extremely grateful to those Labour MPs who have taken time to engage on this issue, and who are now raising concerns with their whips."
A Labour source told The Telegraph: "All Labour MPs stood on our manifesto committing to ban abusive conversion practices, we're delivering on our promises to the British people." Graham Stringer MP for Blackley and Middleton South, said he intended to vote against the bill | FLICKR/HOUSE OF COMMONS A Government spokesman said: "Parents will not be criminalised for questioning a child’s decisions about their identity alone. Parents are free to raise their children and have difficult, challenging conversations, but no one is free to commit abuse.
"Successive Governments have agreed for almost a decade that conversion practices have no place in modern Britain. "We have met with organisations and individuals who are supportive of the draft bill and those raising concerns and look forward to seeing the recommendations from the independent parliamentary committee to help us get this legislation right. "LGBT+ people should never, without exception, have to suffer coercion or abuse in an effort to change who they are."
