Labour politicians have received nearly £300,000 of handouts from Manchester City and the United Arab Emirates. Pressure is mounting on Andy Burnham after the former Mayor of Greater Manchester said he was " really concerned " to lose City's owners after the club was found guilty of massive financial cheating last month. Mr Burnham thanked Sheikh Mansour's City Football Group for the "money that they didn’t just put into the Etihad and the campus around it but also into the city", but was forced into a U-turn as No10 insisted no club was " above the rules ". Thousands of pounds in free tickets and hospitality were given to Labour MPs - including VIP seats for deputy leader Lucy Powell. Labour MPs received £273,396 worth of UAE freebies - more than all other political parties combined. Between October 2014 and May 2025, Man City handouts - worth more than £25,000 - were given to politicians from all parties. Labour received £14,000 of those handouts, with over half of the VIP tickets being given to MPs with direct connections to Manchester. The SNP, Liberal Democrats, and Reform also received handouts from the UAE, receiving £15,000, £3,500 and £1,000, respectively. Gulf state donors included the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of the UAE, the Abu Dhabi Education Council and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. Tax experts suggested Man City may have avoided paying the HMRC over £12million. The extensive handouts from the club and UAE "raises serious questions about foreign influence and transparency", William Yarwood, campaign manager at the TaxPayers' Alliance said. "Politicians who are elected to serve taxpayers must uphold the highest standards of integrity and avoid any conflicts of interest," he added.
