Why thousands are still missing under the rubble in Gaza

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

Whatever the outcome of tomorrow’s vote – it’s unlikely to bring respite to the people of Gaza. The trauma of October 7th has left little space in the Israeli psyche to contemplate the tens of thousands of Palestinians killed there, many of them women and children. That ceasefire deal gave Israel control of just over half of the Strip.

The plan was for them to eventually withdraw once Hamas disarms. But Israeli control has now expanded to 64% – forcing more than 2 million Palestinians into an even smaller strip of land. The rubble of Gaza is now a tomb. Israel still doesn’t allow us in – so working with a Gazan filmmaker – we’ve followed efforts to retrieve the thousands of bodies trapped there. This is the kind of footage Israeli voters seldom see – and a warning, some of it is distressing.

What we found (1)

Channel 4 News reports on Palestinians killed since the ceasefire, Israel's expanding control of the Strip and the thousands of bodies under Gaza's rubble. It names Israeli control and Israel's ban on journalists. One sentence gives the post-ceasefire toll in the passive, with no actor beside the dead, though same-day coverage names Israeli forces.

  1. Hides who did it

    Minor

“More than fourteen hundred Gazans have been killed since the ceasefire last October – five of them today.”

    Why this matters
The words "have been killed" give the post-ceasefire toll and today's five dead with no one doing the killing.
    The impression it gives
A reader learns that people keep dying in Gaza during a ceasefire, but the sentence never says who is killing them. The deaths read as a condition of the place, not as attacks by a named party.
    The context
Same-day coverage names the killers. Anadolu reports rising numbers of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces amid continued Israeli bombardment and gunfire despite the ceasefire. Al Jazeera reports almost daily Israeli air strikes since October 2025.
