This week, Reform will face seven other candidates in the Penn Hill by-election, a ward of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. The by-election was called following the resignation of Liberal Democrats councillor Jo Clements. The Lib Dems won when the ward last voted in May 2023, securing 42.7 per cent of the vote. Reform UK's candidate, promised to send an "undeniable shockwave" to the Liberal Democrat-led council. In a video shared on social media, Ms Dion said: "I just want to explain why it's really important to come out and vote, even though we've got the unitary authority elections just six months away. "This is an immediate opportunity to send an undeniable shockwave to the Lib Dem-led BCP Council, forcing them to wake up to the frustration that residents are feeling about the ongoing decline in public services and the wasting of taxpayers' money."

Nigel Farage is facing his latest by-election test on the South East coast | PA The candidate made clear that she is an "experienced an effective councillor", having served Penn Hill for 16 years as a Tory member. She said: "I have a proven track record in working hard for a residence, making things happen and delivering on any promises. It was never in Poole's interests and that's proven to be the case. "I'm standing again, this time as a Reform UK candidate, because I really love Poole and I love Penn Hill. It's been my home for over 30 years and I was brought up just down the road in Ashley Cross. I will never promise anything that I can't deliver." We cannot afford another six months of unchecked spending and ignored public consultations." What we found (1)

GB News reports a council ward by-election in Penn Hill, Poole, mostly through the Reform UK candidate's own campaign video, and also names the other candidates and quotes the Liberal Democrat candidate. Its headline makes Nigel Farage the one facing a 'crunch' by-election, although the body shows he is not standing and the contest is for a single council seat. Nothing else in the piece misleads.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

“Nigel Farage faces crunch by-election in seaside town”

    Why this matters
The headline says Nigel Farage 'faces' a 'crunch by-election', making him the subject of the contest and calling it decisive.
    The impression it gives
A reader may believe Farage himself is a candidate, or that a parliamentary seat with high national stakes is being fought.
    The context
The body describes a by-election for one ward of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council. The Reform UK candidate is Xena Dion, and Farage is not standing. Dion herself says full council elections are only six months away.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“Reform will face seven other candidates in the Penn Hill by-election, a ward of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole”
    • Elsewhere in the article“Reform UK's candidate Xena Dion has promised to send an 'undeniable shockwave'”
    • Elsewhere in the article“we've got the unitary authority elections just six months away”

What it gets right

  • “The by-election was called following the resignation of Liberal Democrats councillor Jo Clements.”

It tells the reader plainly why the contest is happening and who held the seat.

  • “Penn Hill's other candidates include Max Walker for Restore Britain, Ace Cruz for the Green Party and Amanda Jellicoe for the Liberal Democrats”

It names rival candidates and their parties, not only the Reform candidate.

  • “I'm standing in the Penn Hill by-election because I want to give something back to the area”

It gives the defending Liberal Democrat candidate her own words, not only a mention.
