Germany and Israel extend energy partnership for fifth consecutive year

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

Germany and Israel have extended their bilateral energy cooperation agreement into 2027, marking the fifth consecutive year of the partnership. The agreement was announced on Thursday by Israel’s Energy and Infrastructure Ministry following the signing of a joint work programme with Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy during a visit by a German energy delegation to Israel. The partnership will focus on developing emerging technologies, including geothermal energy and nuclear fusion, as well as cooperation on cleaner fuels and sustainable aviation fuel.

The two countries will also examine the potential for underground natural gas storage and the transportation of . Further areas of cooperation include improving energy efficiency in data centres, developing electric vehicle charging solutions for apartment buildings, expanding the use of heat pumps and using artificial intelligence to manage electricity grids more efficiently. The renewal comes amid strained relations between Israel and several European countries since the October 7 attacks and the subsequent war in Gaza.

Germany has remained one of Israel’s closest European partners, maintaining strong diplomatic, economic and security ties despite growing criticism of Israel’s military campaign. However, tensions emerged in August 2025 when Chancellor Friedrich Merz suspended some arms exports to Israel over its plans to expand the Gaza offensive. The restrictions were lifted following the Gaza ceasefire.

What we found (1)

The Jewish Chronicle reports the renewal of a German and Israeli energy cooperation programme, attributing the announcement to Israel's Energy and Infrastructure Ministry and listing its areas of work. One phrase groups natural gas, a fossil fuel, among "low-carbon gases" without qualification. Otherwise nothing in the report misleads.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“natural gas and other low-carbon gases”

    Why this matters
The words "and other low-carbon gases" place natural gas in the same class as low-carbon gases, in the outlet's own voice and with no attribution to either ministry.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking natural gas is itself a low-carbon fuel, on a par with the cleaner gases the partnership will move.
    The context
Natural gas is a fossil fuel, and burning fossil fuels is the main driver of global warming. The article gives no source for the description and does not separate natural gas from genuinely low-carbon gases.

    How we know

    • On the recordIt is unequivocal that human influence, chiefly the burning of fossil fuels, has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land.ipcc.ch (opens in a new tab)

What it gets right

  • “The agreement was announced on Thursday by Israel’s Energy and Infrastructure Ministry”

The report says plainly who announced the agreement, so the reader knows the source of the details that follow.

  • “Chancellor Friedrich Merz suspended some arms exports to Israel over its plans to expand the Gaza offensive”

It names who acted and why, rather than leaving the arms restrictions as a vague diplomatic tension.
