Residents evacuated after flash flooding destroys homes in Nepal

Flash flooding has destroyed homes along a river in the central part of Nepal, with residents being evacuated by helicopter. <p>It comes as <a href="https://news.sky.com/topic/nepal-6414/1" target="_self"><strong>the country</strong></a> is still recovering from August's <a href="https://news.sky.com/topic/nepal-floods-11947/1" target="_self"><strong>devastating flood</strong></a> along the Nepal-China border in which more than 1,400 people were killed and thousands of others are missing.</p><p>Authorities said on Sunday a dry landslide in Chumnubri village in Gorkha district, about 60 miles west ​of the capital Kathmandu, blocked the Budhi Gandaki river, leading to ‌flooding.</p><p>The Budhi Gandaki merges into the Trishuli river, downstream from ​another tributary where a glacier collapse caused the catastrophic flood in August.</p><widget id="3"></widget><p>Gorkha district's top official, Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, said on Sunday about a dozen houses and two suspension bridges had been swept ‌away, adding that a hydroelectric project camp had also been damaged by the flood.</p><p>"We have asked villagers ​living along the river banks downstream to evacuate and ⁠remain safe," he said.</p><p>National disaster ​authorities alerted people living along the river in the Gorkha, Tanahun, ⁠Chitwan, East Nawalparasi and West Nawalparasi districts about the flood.</p><p>There were no reports of any casualties.</p><p>Some 18 workers at the hydroelectric project escaped to safety.</p><p>And the army rescued six people from Jagat who were facing the risk of a landslide, ⁠Prime Minister Balendra Shah said on social media.</p><p>A highway ‌bridge connecting Gorkha with the neighbouring Dhading district was washed away, said Dharam Raj Uprety, chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.</p><p>Videos on social media showed houses and sheds being swept away by the swollen river flowing between mountains.</p> <widget id="5"></widget><p>Last Monday, the prime minister's office announced search and rescue operations for additional victims of August's disaster would end.</p><p>Authorities will concentrate on recovery, including restoring roads and bridges cut off by floods, particularly in remote areas where damaged infrastructure has made delivering aid difficult.</p><p><strong>More from Sky News:</strong><br /><a href="https://news.sky.com/story/fourteen-killed-in-two-separate-us-mass-shootings-13597601" target="_self"><strong>14 killed in two separate US mass shootings</strong></a><br /><a href="https://news.sky.com/video/how-trumps-data-centre-boom-is-fuelling-anger-and-uniting-right-and-left-voters-ahead-of-midterm-elections-13597634" target="_self"><strong>How Trump's AI data centre boom is fuelling anger</strong></a></p> <widget id="4"></widget><p>The government has said the rebuilding effort will cost $4.77bn (£3.6bn).</p><p>Nearly 33,000 people have been affected and about 7,500 homes were damaged or destroyed.</p>
