Andy Burnham blasted as ‘completely undemocratic’ by Laura Trott as PM flirts with Brexit betrayal

Conservative MP Laura Trott has blasted Andy Burnham as “completely undemocratic” after the Prime Minister opened the door to Britain potentially rejoining the European Union. Speaking to GB News, the Shadow Education Secretary said it was “ridiculous” for Mr Burnham to reopen the Brexit debate, arguing voters had already settled the question in the 2016 referendum. Mr Burnham told The People’s Channel last week that “all options” should be considered when deciding the UK’s long-term relationship with Brussels. Calling for an “honest and grown-up conversation” on the topic, he had previously suggested that the UK could “go all the way” in rejoining the bloc. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say “This is obviously a ridiculous thing to say,” Ms Trott said, accusing the Prime Minister of unnecessarily reopening old wounds. “You think about all the issues we have in this country at the moment. People at home are sitting there watching this, thinking: ‘God, what is the Prime Minister doing?’ “Why is he trying to open up what was settled? There was a vote. It was decided. “It is so completely undemocratic to say we didn’t like the first answer. We’re going to ask you again. It’s absurd,” the Tory MP insisted. Andy Burnham EU overtures have been blasted as 'completely undemocratic' by Laura Trott | GB NEWS Pressed on whether the Conservatives would oppose Mr Burnham if he pursued a plan to rejoin the EU, Ms Trott replied: “We would oppose it.” When asked whether her party would campaign for Leave in another referendum, she suggested it most likely would. “I think so, yes. I would – I don’t know, I haven’t asked Kemi (Bafenoch) that question directly, but that would be my absolute assumption. “And we absolutely oppose the fact that he’s doing this in the first place,” she stressed. She said the prospect was “quite a lot of hypotheticals”, pointing instead to the next General Election. The Conservative MP added: “Mr Burnham’s going to have to win the next election to do this, and I don’t think he will.” Labour’s 2024 manifesto ruled out returning to the EU, the single market or a customs union, as well as restoring freedom of movement. Ms Trott said the Tories would oppose the Prime Minister bringing forward another referendum | GB NEWS Mr Burnham also appeared to personally rule out rapprochement with Brussels when standing in the Makefield by-election over the summer. “Our relentless focus now should be on domestic issues, and fixing our own underlying problems, rather than on re-running divisive arguments about rejoining the European Union,” he said at the time.
