Times of Israel, on Lebanon, 20 October 2026

The Times of Israel reports the Tampa talks largely through Israel's side of the table: Netanyahu gets four sentences and two direct quotes, Lebanon's position one attributed line, and the paper calls Hezbollah "the terror group" in its own voice while describing its "elimination" in the abstract. It does name Israeli troops in southern Lebanon and Lebanon's demand that Israeli attacks stop, but it never states, as Anadolu does, that the talks are taking place while Israeli attacks on the south continue.

What we found

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “the terror group”

    What the words do
The Times of Israel attaches the verdict "terror group" to Hezbollah in its own voice, with no attribution and nothing in the article to support it.
What a reader comes away believing
That "terror group" is a neutral description of a party to the talks the article reports on.
    What is actually the case
The article elsewhere refers to Hezbollah plainly when describing the framework agreement, so the label adds a judgement the reporting does not carry; Hezbollah is also a party in Lebanese politics and in the talks the article describes.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“aimed at disarming Hezbollah”

    Show it in the article

    “Hezbollah’s elimination”

    What the words do
The paper renders Netanyahu's aim as "elimination", a bloodless abstraction, in its own paraphrase rather than his quoted words.
What a reader comes away believing
That what is being proposed is the tidy removal of an organisation rather than military action against people in Lebanon.
    What is actually the case
The same sentence block has Netanyahu warning Israel will "take care of it" itself if the Lebanese army does not clear the pilot zones, which is a threat of force on Lebanese territory.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“warning that Israel would take action itself”

  2. One side gets the space

    Minor

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told The Times of Israel during a briefing on Sunday that Israel would demand that the Lebanese Armed Forces demonstrate its ability to clear Hezbollah threats from two designated pilot areas under the framework”

    What the words do
Opens four sentences and two direct quotes given to Netanyahu's demands, against a single attributed line for Lebanon's position.
What a reader comes away believing
That the dispute at the talks is essentially about whether Lebanon can deliver on disarmament.
    What is actually the case
Other outlets covering the same talks report Lebanese officials accusing Israel of violating the existing agreements and refusing to withdraw from south of the Litani, and Lebanon rejecting direct military co-ordination with the Israeli army; none of that appears here.

    How we know

  3. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

The article never states in its own voice that Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon are continuing while the talks take place; it appears only as something Lebanon's presidency will "demand an end to". Anadolu reports the continuing attacks as fact in its account of the same meetings. Without it, a reader takes Netanyahu's threat to "take care of it" as a future possibility rather than a continuation.

  4. Leaves out what changes the picture

    Minor

    What is missing

The article does not mention that Lebanon is refusing the US-backed proposal for its troops to co-ordinate directly with the Israeli army, the central sticking point other outlets put at the heart of this round. A reader is left thinking only Hezbollah's disarmament is in dispute.

Israel and Lebanon to hold ‘working level’ talks in Florida today, US official says

Israel and Lebanon to hold ‘working level’ talks in Florida today, US official says

Nava Freiberg is The Times of Israel's deputy diplomatic correspondent.

Israel and Lebanon will hold US-mediated discussions at the “working level” in Tampa, Florida, today, without the participation of Jerusalem’s or Beirut’s ambassador to Washington, a US official tells The Times of Israel.

The talks set for October 20-21 are expected to focus on advancing the Trilateral Framework Agreement aimed at disarming Hezbollah and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon.

Lebanon’s presidency said last week that its military delegation will demand an end to Israeli attacks in Lebanon at the trilateral meeting.

, warning that Israel would take action itself if the Lebanese military failed to do so.

“We gave you two ‘pilot zones’ – go in, clear them out. Can you do it? Good. You can’t do it? We’ll take care of it,” he said.

He also suggested that could pave the way for peace between Israel and Lebanon, but did not specify a deadline for the Lebanese military to disarm .

The talks come amid heightened tensions within Lebanon over communications between the two countries, including a legal complaint filed against Lebanese Ambassador to the US Nada Hamadeh Moawad after she allegedly contacted Israeli ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter to condemn the West Bank car ramming attack that left his son in critical condition — in apparent violation of Lebanon’s laws forbidding direct contact with Israel. The US State Department publicly condemned the complaint against Moawad and was weighing sanctions against Lebanese judges involved in handling it, a US official familiar with the matter told The Times of Israel last week.

What it gets right

  • “will demand an end to Israeli attacks in Lebanon”

Names Israel as the party carrying out attacks in Lebanon, and tells the reader what Beirut is bringing to the table.

  • “We’ll take care of it”

Quotes Netanyahu's threat of unilateral Israeli military action directly, so the reader sees it in his own words rather than a paraphrase.

  • “the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon”

States plainly that Israeli troops are in southern Lebanon and that their withdrawal is what is being negotiated.
