UK Green party adopts 'Zionism is racism' policy

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.4 findings

The UK's left-wing Green party voted Sunday to define Zionism as racism at the party's annual conference, . Members of the Green party, which has five MPs in Britain's 650-seat parliament and which enjoyed a boost in recent local and special elections, backed the motion at the party's conference, with 1,022 votes in favour and 813 against.

According to the motion, Zionism would be "treated as any other form of racism" and the party supports the establishment of a "". "This has been a serious and deeply felt debate within our membership," a Green spokesperson said. The Greens have enjoyed a surge in popularity under the charismatic leadership of Zack Polanski, attracting voters dissatisfied with the centre-left Labour government's stance on the Israel-Hamas war.

AFP never gives the motion's own definition of Zionism: an ideology that maintains an ethnonationalist Jewish state to the exclusion or domination of the non-Jewish population. Nor does it say the motion states that it is not aimed at any religion or ethnicity and that not all Jews are Zionists. The only definition printed is Herzog's in S9, so a reader believes the Greens branded the Jewish right to a state, and the Jews who support it, as racist. That is the reading Phillipson gives in S11, and the article never tests it against the text.

However, Polanski's popularity has taken a hit in recent months, polls show, following several missteps. "This motion would make the Green Party the first electorally significant UK political party in living memory to adopt what appears to be an overtly antisemitic political platform," three Jewish community groups said in a letter to the party ahead of the vote. "We also emphasised the implications for the safety and welfare of all British Jews," the heads of the Board of Deputies, Community Security Trust and Jewish Leadership Council warned. - Israel's anger - Israel's president, Isaac Herzog, called the Green party's decision "a disgrace".

"Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, and it forms the basis for the Jewish people's right to a state and a national home in the Land of Israel," Herzog said on X. Bridget Phillipson, chair of the ruling Labour Party and Minister for Women and Equalities, also condemned the Green Party's conference decision. "It is shameful to vote against a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine and to condemn the vast majority of British Jews and Jews around the world as racist for supporting Israel's right to exist," she said in a party statement.

The motion laid bare divisions in the party with Polanski -- who is currently running to become an MP in former prime minister Keir Starmer's London constituency -- skipping the vote. Despite at least three out of five Green MPs opposing the motion, Polanski said earlier this week that the "displacement and genocide of the Palestinian people" was "clearly racism". United Nations investigators have accused Israel of committing "genocide" in the war in Gaza, . bur-jj/sbk

AFP reports the Green Party's Zionism vote through its opponents: Jewish communal bodies, Israel's president and Labour all get quotes, and no supporter of the motion is quoted. It cuts the motion's single-state clause before its promise of equal rights, never gives the motion's own definition of Zionism, and ends by calling the UN genocide finding an accusation that Israel has rejected.

“a finding that Israel has rejected”

    Why this matters
AFP ends the whole article on Israel's denial and sets nothing against it.
    The impression it gives
That Israel's rejection leaves the genocide finding an open question, with the accused party having the final word.
    The context
The UN Commission of Inquiry found Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. A denial by the state found responsible does not weigh equally against that finding.

“single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine”

    Why this matters
AFP quotes the motion's single-state clause and stops before it says the state would have equal rights for all and the right of return.
    The impression it gives
That the motion calls for a Palestinian state with no stated rights for the Jewish Israelis who live there. That makes Phillipson's and Herzog's attacks in S9 and S11 look like a plain reading of the text.
    The context
The clause goes on to commit the party to equal rights for all and the right of return for Palestinians. Our editorial found AFP among eight outlets that cut it at that point.

“drawing sharp backlash from three British Jewish groups, the ruling Labour Party and Israel's government”

    Why this matters
AFP frames the story around the backlash and then quotes three Jewish bodies, Israel's president and Labour's chair. The motion's supporters get no quote, and the only Green voices are a neutral spokesperson and Polanski, who skipped the vote.
    The impression it gives
That the case against the motion is the whole story and that nobody spoke for it.
    The context
The campaigners behind the motion, Greens for Palestine, spoke to the media after the vote, and a former councillor explained what the policy meant. Our editorial found AFP quoted no supporter at all.
