The US President made the extraordinary suggestion in a post on Truth Social, asking his followers whether the crucial waterway should become the "TRUMP STRAIT". He wrote: "Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? "Like America itself, it would be 'hotter' than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP." Trump's suggestion comes amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran around the Strait of Hormuz. American forces launched fresh strikes on Iranian targets near the crucial shipping route on Tuesday, with Trump describing the attacks as "large and powerful". The President said the strikes were in retaliation for what he described as Iran's failed attempt to place sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as eight missiles allegedly fired at a US military base in Jordan. He also said the eight missiles targeting the US military base in Jordan had been "successfully knocked down". Jordan's armed forces also said eight missiles which entered the country's airspace early on Monday were intercepted. Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT The exchange followed earlier US action against alleged Iranian mine-laying forces, which American military officials described as a "limited, precise action". Trump subsequently told Fox News: "We're going to hit them hard. There will be a response." Trump said: "If the failed nation of Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level, but it will not be the biggest attack of them all, that is waiting in the wings and, when it is over, there will be very little left of the Islamic Republic of Iran!" The US President has also stepped up his rhetoric over Iran's nuclear ambitions , describing the country's leadership as "violent" and "evil". Speaking to Fox News, he said: "If they had a nuclear weapon, Israel would be gone. If I weren't President, Israel would be gone and there would probably be no Middle East." The escalating tensions have also rattled energy markets, with oil prices surging by around three per cent following the previous strikes. An anti-US billboard featuring Trump has meanwhile appeared in southern Tehran carrying the slogan: "Great Victory, Strait of Hormuz".
