US costs of Iran war rise to over $47 billion, according to Pentagon estimate

The US military has spent over $47 billion so far to prosecute the war in Iran, more than 25% higher than the Defense Department’s estimate in July, according to Pentagon data reviewed by Reuters.

The bulk of the war’s operational costs included more than $29 billion to replace expended munitions and more than $6 billion to replace military equipment. The figures do not clearly include a cost estimate to repair damage to US bases sustained by Iranian missile and drone attacks.

About this analysis

The Times of Israel reproduces a short Reuters item reporting that the Pentagon's own estimate of US spending on the Iran war has passed $47 billion, with the munitions and equipment figures attributed and the estimate's gap on base repairs noted. Its figures match the Reuters report and the other coverage of the same event, and nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “according to Pentagon data reviewed by Reuters”

The outlet attributes the cost figure to the Pentagon's data and to Reuters rather than stating it as its own fact, and the headline keeps that attribution.

  • “The figures do not clearly include a cost estimate to repair damage to US bases sustained by Iranian missile and drone attacks.”

The outlet tells the reader the official figure is likely incomplete, which matches Reuters, the New York Times and Antiwar.com. The reader does not take the $47 billion as the full cost.
