Reuters names Israeli fire as the cause of four deaths, but lets the Israeli military's claim that it struck "Hamas militants" stand with nothing set against it. It leaves out the Gaza Interior Ministry's statement that the man killed in the Gaza City car was a drug control police officer. In its own voice it calls Israel's strikes strikes on Hamas, though its own dead include a woman shot near Jabalia.

  1. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Serious

“said it had struck Hamas militants in Khan Younis, Nuseirat and”

    Why this matters
Reuters closes its account of the killings with the Israeli military's claim that the people it struck in three places were "Hamas militants". Nothing in the article tests that claim or says who the dead were.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it that the dead in Khan Younis, Nuseirat and Gaza City were fighters, so the strikes were aimed at armed men.
    The context
The same day's report of this event carries the Gaza Interior Ministry's statement that the Gaza City strike killed a drug control police officer returning from an assignment. The article gives no evidence that any of the dead was armed. It describes them only as a man on a bike, a man near a camp and a person in a car.

  3. States one side's claim as fact

    Minor

“has stepped up strikes on the group in recent weeks”

    Why this matters
In its own voice Reuters calls Israel's strikes strikes "on the group", meaning Hamas.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it that the strikes hit Hamas, as Israel says.
    The context
The article's own dead include a woman shot near Jabalia, and the same day's coverage reports a police officer killed in Gaza City. Whether the strikes are on Hamas is Israel's claim, not an established fact.
