What we found (1)

The Sun reports that Fireworks Control Zones are in force in 14 parts of Edinburgh and four parts of Glasgow for Bonfire Night, with fines of up to £5,000 or up to six months in prison for breaking them. Its headline says this comes 'after law change', but the article's own body shows the law dates from 2022 and the zones from 2024. Otherwise the piece is accurate and gives the locations, dates and penalties plainly.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

    “after law change”

    Why this matters
The words 'after law change' present the ban as the result of a fresh change in the law.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away believing a new law has just been passed that bans fireworks this Bonfire Night.
    The context
The article's own body says the zones were introduced under the Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022, first used by Edinburgh in 2024. This is a returning seasonal measure, not a new change in the law.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“Edinburgh City Council first introduced the zones as part of The Firework and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022 back in 2024”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “a fine of up to £5,000 or up to a six month prison sentence”

The article gives the penalties as maximums and attributes them to Police Scotland, rather than implying everyone caught faces prison and a £5,000 fine.

  • “14 control zones in Edinburgh and four in Glasgow came into effect on October 30, running until November 8 and 9 respectively.”

It gives the exact number of zones and their dates, so readers can see the ban is local and time-limited.
