They voted by 309 to 113 – a majority of 196 – against the motion, which would have also condemned plans to house 1,256 males at a disused Ministry of Defence site near Piddington, Oxfordshire. Residents of the small village in Oxfordshire, which Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch visited last month, have been in uproar and even voted to leave the UK in a symbolic referendum. They have raised fears over the safety of women in Piddington and criticised Labour for failing to engage. It comes as more than 20,000 people have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this year.
