Khamenei: IRGC will have to any US, Israeli threats

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

The IRGC needs to have "an unrestricted response" to any threats, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said at a meeting with top Iranian army officials on Saturday.

Khamenei ordered the Iranian army to prepare "an immediate, impactful, and geographically unrestricted response," saying that Iran will determine "timing and terms for ending any new conflicts," in case their enemies resume attacks.

"If the enemies once again launch military or terrorist attacks, it is the armed forces of the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation that will determine the time and conditions for their end," Khamenei said in a statement published in the country's semi-official Nour News Agency.

Khamenei ordered the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps to update its target list with the aim of having "all tangible and intangible assets of the US and Israel within reach of the armed forces."

He named "intelligent combat readiness for a powerful confrontation with enemies" as a requirement for "maximum deterrence," announcing that every level and type of threat must be met with an immediate and effective response, without geographical limitations.

This is a developing story.

What we found (1)

The Jerusalem Post reports Mojtaba Khamenei's order to Iran's armed forces to prepare an immediate response without geographic limits if the US or Israel attack again. It attributes his words throughout and keeps his conditional, defensive wording. The one flaw is minor: the headline puts in quotation marks a phrase stitched together from longer wording in the body.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

    “'immediate, unrestricted response'”

    Why this matters
The headline puts the words 'immediate, unrestricted response' in quotation marks as if Khamenei said them in that form.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it that Khamenei used this exact three-word phrase.
    The context
The body quotes him ordering "an immediate, impactful, and geographically unrestricted response" and separately "an unrestricted response". The headline joins the two inside quotation marks with no sign that words were cut, and drops the word 'geographically'. That word limits 'unrestricted' to reach rather than to any kind of response. The change is small but quietly widens the threat.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“an immediate, impactful, and geographically unrestricted response”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “"If the enemies once again launch military or terrorist attacks, it is the armed forces of the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation that will determine the time and conditions for their end,"”

The Post quotes Khamenei's conditional in full and names where it was published. The reader sees that the order concerns a response to renewed attacks, not a first strike.

  • “in case their enemies resume attacks”

The Post keeps the condition in its own summary, so the reader knows there were earlier attacks on Iran and that the order is framed as a response to any new ones.
