Support us Wes Streeting has warned that Britain must be ready for war in 1,000 days amid fears of a conflict with Russia. The Defence Secretary said the UK's adversaries could strike the country by 2030. Earlier this week, Labour rolled out its 'Be Ready' preparedness campaign, urging Britons to begin stockpiling tinned food and bottled water .

Now, writing in The Telegraph, Mr Streeting said his "defining priority" was to make sure the country was "ready to fight and win a war". TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say "That is the only metric that counts," he added. According to Mr Streeting, Britons should prepare for the worst. His resilience campaign advises Britons to have three days' worth of supplies in case of emergency. "To prevent the worst, we have to prepare for it," he said.

"In the first instance, that means expanding our capabilities so our adversaries think twice about attacking us. Wes Streeting has said Labour must 'ensure Britain is ready for war' within 1,000 days | PA "Should that fail, we must ensure that Britain is ready for war." But Labour has already come under criticism for not setting out how it will reach John Healey's target of spending three per cent of GDP on defence by 2030, a key point before Nato's target of 3.5 per cent by 2035.

The Defence Secretary claimed he was "100 per cent" confident Andy Burnham and the Chancellor would be able to meet the 2035 Nato target. His remarks echo Mr Healey's from earlier this year, who also insisted he was "100 per cent committed" to his own target. As defence funding looms over the Chancellor's first Budget , Russian threats have become more prominent. Earlier this week, it was revealed that Russia had been pinpointing the exact location of Britain's crucial undersea cables . And if slashed by Moscow on the first day of a Nato conflict , as General Sir Gwyn Jenkins believes, the UK has just one vessel capable of repairing them. Vladimir Putin has sent fishing trawlers to monitor Britain's undersea cables as Russian threats intensify | REUTERS Labour, this week, has outlined plans to dole out harsh criminal punishments for those convicted of tampering with either undersea internet cables or energy pipelines.

It will also grant telecommunications powers to remove or disable services during a national emergency. While Russia has been conducting reconnaissance for a future conflict with the West, it has also been embroiled in its years-long invasion of Ukraine. Mr Streeting said the fighting between the two countries showed the importance of using "every penny wisely". He said: "When modern warfare requires us to be agile, adapt constantly and think differently, I will not shy away from diverting funding earmarked for one project to another one that makes more sense.

"That is the lesson from Ukraine, where tactics and technologies on the battlefield today are a world away from when the war began just a few years ago. "We have seen how a drone costing £500 can destroy a £3m tank and how innovative armoury can be deployed in weeks rather than years. "In a world changing at such breakneck speed, the most dangerous words in defence today are, 'We have always done it this way'." GB News reports Wes Streeting's Telegraph article warning that Britain must be ready for war within 1,000 days, and it attributes his warnings and the cable threat to named sources. In its own voice it adds dramatic colour, with Russia fears that "erupt" and a Defence Secretary who "ominously" declared. It also presents its own reading of Streeting's words as a "clear indicator" that John Healey will miss his target. These are minor problems, and the core facts match other coverage.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “as Russia fears erupt”

    Why this matters
The headline says Russia fears "erupt", a word that suggests a sudden outbreak of alarm.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it that some new event has set off a sudden surge of fear about Russia.
    The context
The body reports an opinion article by the Defence Secretary and a week of preparedness announcements. Other outlets describe the backdrop more plainly, as Russia stepping up hybrid warfare.

    How we know

    Show it in the article

    “ominously declared”

    Why this matters
In its own voice GB News says the Defence Secretary "ominously declared" a line about preparing for the worst.
    The impression it gives
A reader is told how to feel about the quote: as a menacing announcement rather than a statement of policy.
    The context
The same quote appears later in plain words, simply as something he said.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“we have to prepare for it," he said”

    Show it in the article

  2. States its own inference as fact

    Minor

“in a clear indicator Mr Healey will not meet his own target”

    Why this matters
GB News tells the reader, in its own voice, that Streeting's remark about a "fixation with percentages and dates" is a "clear indicator" that Healey will miss his spending target.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it as established that the 3 per cent target will be missed and that Streeting has as good as said so.
    The context
Streeting did not say the target would be missed. The article itself reports that he said he was fully confident the Chancellor would meet the Nato target. The "clear indicator" is the outlet's own reading.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“confident Andy Burnham and the Chancellor would be able to meet the 2035 Nato target”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “writing in The Telegraph, Mr Streeting said”

It names where the Defence Secretary made his claims and attributes them to him rather than stating them as fact.

  • “as General Sir Gwyn Jenkins believes”

The claim that Moscow would cut the cables on the first day of a conflict is attributed to a named military source, not stated in the outlet's voice.

  • “Labour has already come under criticism for not setting out how it will reach John Healey's target”

It sets the funding gap against the minister's confident claims instead of leaving those claims unanswered.
