Britain’s Green Party votes to class Zionism as a form of racism

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.6 findings

Britain’s Green Party voted on Sunday to class Zionism as a form of racism, and from the Israeli government which said it now viewed the party as “a body that gives legitimacy to terrorism.” The party – which received 6% of the vote in national elections in 2024 – said it regarded Zionism as “an ethnonationalist political project” and repeated its call for Britain’s Labour government to end all arms trade with Israel.

“The motion also restates the Green Party’s backing for the right to self-determination and calls for the establishment of a single democratic state throughout historic Palestine,” the party said in a statement. The definition of Zionism – which inspired the foundation of the modern state of Israel in the 20th century – and what it implies for the rights of non-Jews in Israel and neighbouring territory, is contentious. Jewish groups sometimes define it as a right to Jewish self-determination.

The Green Party motion passed by a majority of 1,022 to 813 despite opposition from many senior figures. Party leader Zack Polanski, who is seeking election to Parliament on Thursday in former Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s now-vacant London constituency, did not vote. The result was condemned by British Jewish groups. “The Green Party has made antisemitism party policy and become a racist party,” the Movement for Progressive Judaism said, adding that the support of some Jews for the motion did not mean it would not be used to discriminate against others.

Left out here: Leaves out who was behind it

The article never says who brought the motion: the members' group Greens for Palestine, with a Palestinian member, Lubna Speitan, as proposer. A reader sees a motion about Palestinians with no Palestinian behind it.

How we know

Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar has decided to declare Polanski barred from entering Israel, the foreign ministry said in a post on X Sunday. It said the Green Party motion “constitutes a clear antisemitic text according to the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) definition, as it denies the Jewish people’s right to self-determination,” the ministry said. Mothin Ali, deputy leader of the Green Party and a supporter of the motion, told Sky News on Saturday that the heavy Palestinian death toll in – – was the key context for the vote.

“The motion defines Zionism quite clearly. It defines it as an ethnonationalist movement. It defines it as ethnic cleansing. It defines it as genocide,” Ali said. Britain’s government views Israeli settlers’ actions in the West Bank as amounting to ethnic cleansing but has said courts must decide if other Israeli actions qualify as genocide. Israel – – called on Sunday for other British political parties to condemn the Green Party vote.

“,” it said. Polanski and other senior Green Party figures said they would “continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government,” and that “there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people.”

Left out here: Drops what it reported before

The joint statement CNN quotes also committed Polanski, his deputies and the party's MPs to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation. CNN cuts that sentence, so a reader thinks the leadership spoke only of the Netanyahu government's crimes.

What we found (6)

CNN runs Reuters copy that, in its own voice, calls Israel's genocide in Gaza "Israel's conflict with Hamas" and inserts the 7 October attack into the middle of the Green deputy leader's explanation for the vote. It reduces genocide to "claims" that Israel rejects and never tells readers that a UN Commission of Inquiry has found Israel is committing genocide. Israel's foreign ministry gets far more space than any supporter of the motion, and no Palestinian speaks.

  1. Hedges the documented record

    Serious

“which rejects claims of ethnic cleansing and genocide”

    Why this matters
CNN calls genocide "claims" in its own voice and sets them only against Israel's rejection and, in the sentence before, the UK government's view that courts must decide.
    The impression it gives
Whether Israel is committing genocide is an open dispute between critics and Israel, with no finding by any international body.
    The context
A UN Commission of Inquiry has found that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The article never reports that finding, so the Greens' description of genocide reads as one party's opinion.

    Written straight

Israel rejects the findings of ethnic cleansing and genocide, including a UN Commission of Inquiry's finding that it is committing genocide in Gaza.

  2. Tells the event as something else

    Minor

    “Israel’s conflict with Hamas”

    Why this matters
In its own voice CNN names what Mothin Ali called the context for the vote "Israel's conflict with Hamas".
    The impression it gives
The Palestinian deaths are the toll of a two-sided fight between Israel and an armed group.
    The context
A UN Commission of Inquiry has found that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Ali himself told Sky News the motion defines Zionism as genocide, and CNN's phrase replaces his description with a softer one in the outlet's voice.

“which followed the Palestinian militant group’s deadly 2023 attack on an Israeli music festival”

    Why this matters
CNN inserts this clause into the middle of its paraphrase of Ali, so his explanation of the vote carries the Israeli government's starting point for the story.
    The impression it gives
Ali framed the Palestinian toll as a response to the 7 October attack, or that the attack is the key to understanding the deaths.
    The context
The words CNN quotes from Ali do not mention the attack. The clause is the outlet's own addition.

  3. One side gets the space

    Minor

“The Greens have adopted not only the green of Hamas, but also its ideology: the elimination of the State of Israel through armed struggle”

    Why this matters
CNN gives Israel's foreign ministry a third block of quotation, here tying the party to Hamas and armed struggle, after the travel ban and the antisemitism charge.
    The impression it gives
The Israeli state's reading of the motion is the main reaction that matters, and no Palestinian view of a motion about Palestinians exists.
    The context
The motion, as the party's own statement in the article says, calls for a single democratic state. No Palestinian is quoted anywhere in the piece, and Israeli state voices fill four sentences.

  4. Speaks for a whole community

    Minor

    “drawing criticism from British Jews”

    Why this matters
CNN's opening sentence says the vote drew criticism from "British Jews" as a whole.
    The impression it gives
British Jews speak with one voice against the motion.
    The context
The article's only Jewish source is one communal body, and that body itself acknowledges that some Jews support the motion.
