Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed regional and international developments in a telephone call, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported Monday.

The discussions focused particularly on West Asia, according to the broadcaster.

During the call, Rezaei expressed appreciation for remarks by Putin and other Russian officials praising Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other prominent national figures, as well as their support for the Iranian people’s resilience, the report said.

Both sides stressed the importance of continuing strategic cooperation in accordance with the roadmap outlined by the two countries’ leaders.

IRIB provided no further details on specific regional issues discussed or measures to advance bilateral cooperation.

About this analysis

Anadolu Agency reports a phone call between Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Every claim about the call is attributed to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, and the article says plainly what IRIB did not disclose. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported Monday”

The article names its single source and says what kind of source it is, so the reader knows the account comes from Iranian state media.

  • “IRIB provided no further details on specific regional issues discussed or measures to advance bilateral cooperation.”

The article tells the reader where its information stops instead of padding the report with speculation about what was discussed.

  • “the report said”

Rezaei's expressions of appreciation are kept as the broadcaster's account, not stated in the outlet's own voice.
