Israeli troops evict Palestinian, demolish his home in West Bank raid

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.1 finding

Israeli troops ordered a Palestinian man out of his home before demolishing it during a raid Monday on Qalqilya in the occupied West Bank, local sources told Anadolu. The troops entered the city with two bulldozers and headed to Naim Abu Shihab’s home in al-Naqqar neighborhood, where they ordered him to evacuate before demolishing the property, the sources said. They cited the lack of a building permit as the reason for the demolition.

Israeli forces and fired tear gas canisters on al-Malaab Street. No gunshot injuries were reported. The Palestine Red Crescent said its crews treated three people at the scene for tear gas exposure. Troops also damaged sidewalks in the city’s central market area, according to local sources. Earlier Monday, the Palestinian Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission said it documented 13 attacks by Israeli forces and occupiers targeting farmers and their land across four West Bank governorates.

The occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has seen escalating Israeli military attacks and occupier violence since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The attacks have included killing and detaining Palestinians, demolishing homes and other structures, burning mosques and vehicles, bulldozing farmland, preventing farmers from accessing their fields, and displacing Palestinian communities, alongside illegal settlement expansion.

What we found (1)

Anadolu reports that Israeli troops forced Naim Abu Shihab out of his home in Qalqilya and bulldozed it, and it names the actor, the victim and the occupation throughout. One small gap remains. Anadolu writes that troops opened fire during "confrontations", a word that suggests two sides fought, when the article describes only troops firing live rounds and tear gas.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

“opened fire during confrontations in the neighborhood”

    Why this matters
The word "confrontations" casts the shooting as part of an exchange between two sides.
    The impression it gives
A reader may picture a two-sided clash in which the troops were answering something.
    The context
The article describes only Israeli troops entering with bulldozers, firing, using tear gas and damaging sidewalks. It reports no Palestinian action that the word could refer to.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“The troops entered the city with two bulldozers”
    • Elsewhere in the article“Troops also damaged sidewalks in the city’s central market area”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “Israeli troops evict Palestinian, demolish his home”

The headline names who did it and calls the act an eviction and a demolition.

  • “Naim Abu Shihab’s home in al-Naqqar neighborhood”

It names the man whose home was destroyed and gives the place, so he is not just a number.

  • “alongside illegal settlement expansion”

It states the settlements' illegality as fact, which matches the ICJ's finding (R2).
