During Patrick Christys Tonight show, host Nana Akua revealed the true cost of migration in the UK which is effectively costing taxpayers thousands each year. It comes amid reports the home secretary's proposal to extend qualifying period for settlement in UK. The Daily Express columnist began, "I remember when Shabana Mahmood came to power and she said she was going to sort out immigration. She was very punchy about it. She made a whole load of punchy announcements about it. She went over to Denmark, went to see how they did it and came back with a lot of ideas." She went on: "You won't be able to get leave to remain for 10 years. You might not be able to get permanent settlement for 20 years. I'm thinking brilliant, she's going to do it. Then all of a sudden she's backpedalling because [Angela] Rayner is opening her big mouth again. Rayner even said these reforms were "Un-British". Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT "How stupid can you be? What's un-British is taxpayers in this country having to pay £41,000-per-year for every migrant who comes to this country illegally. This is not on. We can't afford to be doing this." According to reports, more than 200,000 people have been granted indefinite leave to remain since ministers proposed tough restrictions last year. Thousands of migrants are settling permanently in Britain every week, which gives them entitlement to lifetime benefits, NHS care and social housing. At least 5,000 people who have lived here for five years – having legally arrived on visas – gain settlement each week, figures have suggested. Ministers have proposed tougher restrictions on legal migrants being able to claim indefinite leave to remain, but Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood recently signalled that she may have to water down those plans. Ms Rayner has said she is concerned about Labour's proposals to change visa rules, which would make it harder for foreign workers to secure permanent residency in the UK. Daily Express columnist Carole Malone SLAMS Shabana Mahmood for failing to tackle the immigration crisis. https://t.co/bp0JPlimv3 — GB News (@GBNEWS) October 19, 2026 "That means for the rest of their lives they can claim benefits," Carole argued, "they can have free houses, they can have free healthcare and that is all upon the British taxpayer." Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT In a huge blow to the prime minister Andy Burnham, she said: "I just think Burnham he has steadfastly refused to talk about immigration. He won't talk about it and yet he's not backing his home secretary, whose been kicked from all sides and is being called far-right in her own party." She referenced Miatta Fahnbulleh's comments around immigration. The secretary of state for energy security and net zero, said the debate around immigration had become "increasingly depressing and toxic", and could spark community unrest. Carole hit back: "What is causing community unrest is hoards of young men, military age migrant men, being parachuted into communities and then left there to commit the crimes." Strictly star forced to leave BBC show immediately as they issue emotional statement BBC has made Strictly a laughing stock after major mistake Nana confirmed that the recent reports are based on legal migration. In explosive scenes, a row emerged between Carole and former Labour politician Bill Rammell, who defended the home secretary. He argued: "I think she is going to deliver on this." But Carole fumed: "She hasn't delivered anything." Bill said: "Yes, she has. Net migration is down by 80 per cent. Small boat crossings are down by 45 per cent." Carole interjected: "Stop quoting that figure! It's not 45 per cent, it's 40,360." Without reforms, 1.6million people would be entitled to settle in the UK between 2026 and 2030. Reform UK home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf said Ms Mahmood had "capitulated to Labour's open-borders zealots".
