BBC News, on Climate, 23 October 2026

The BBC reports Storm Austen's flooding, fallen trees and transport chaos across the south coast in detail, but never once tells its reader that a warmer atmosphere makes heavy rainfall and coastal flooding of this kind more frequent and more severe. The reader gets a full account of the damage with no word on why such storms are loading the dice.

“issued flood warnings for the Dorset coast, including the Chiswell area and Christchurch Harbour, with people urged to avoid seafronts and harbours due to waves overtopping and spray containing debris”

    What the words do
Reports flood warnings and overtopping waves as a self-contained weather event, with no word on warming.
What a reader comes away believing
That this flooding is simply the weather doing what it always does.
    What is actually the case
Warming has made heavy rainfall and coastal flooding more frequent and more severe. The article carries no sentence saying so.

    How we know

    • On the recordThat warming has made hot extremes, heavy rainfall, agricultural and ecological drought, fire weather and intense tropical cyclones more frequent or more severe.ipcc.ch (opens in a new tab)
    • Elsewhere in the article“Strong winds and large waves caused flooding in the Chiswell area”

“Strong winds and large waves caused flooding in the Chiswell area on Portland early on Friday morning”

    What the words do
Describes the flooding again, in the BBC's own caption voice, without linking it to a warming climate.
What a reader comes away believing
That a second mention of flooding needs no explanation beyond wind and waves.
    What is actually the case
The report never tells the reader that climate change is making storms of this kind wetter and their coastal flooding worse, a line as short as one sentence would have supplied.
