Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued a statement on the election, saying that the results prove Americans are opposed to his war on Iran. Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT In a post on X, Mr Ghalibaf wrote: “Conscience or the cost of living , Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message. If the US govt betrays their public will to serve international paymasters and blackmailers, it will learn our NO comes with a Nightmare.”

Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei has also hit out at the US, saying: " Today, as a result of the arrogance of the oppressors, the waning power and dominance of America has suffered an irreversible collapse in both the hard military power and the soft international power dimensions, and its process of disintegration has been accelerated." Midterm voters turned on the President (Image: Getty) In a remarkable sweep, the Democrats won Senate seats in the former Republican strongholds of Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio, Maine and Iowa.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT The midterm elections to Congress were seen as a referendum on the controversial Republican president. The Democratic victories represent a major blow to Mr Trump, who had previously urged people to pretend he was on the voting slip.

In the face of the crushing losses, Mr Trump posted on his Truth Social platform: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” Democrats needed a net gain of four seats in the 100-member Senate to win a majority, while in the 435-member House, they needed three. Speaking to Fox News, Mr Trump admitted the results had surprised him. “I thought they’d do better, we had tremendous rallies,” he said. He also congratulated the Democrats and said: “They did a good job.

Left out here: Drops what it reported before

The article quotes Trump's Fox News interview only for his surprise at the result. It omits his remark, reported by the Express an hour earlier, that voters 'weren't willing to do the short-term consequence of paying more for gasoline' from his Iran policy. Without it, the link between the losses and the Iran war appears only as Iran's taunt, when Trump himself drew that link.

They worked very hard.” But while offering to work with opponents, he had also posted a picture of a red baseball cap emblazoned with the word “Veto”, suggesting he would block legislation they sought to take through Congress. “I thought that I could transfer those people into candidates.” Donald Trump Iran Share Article Share Article Facebook X LinkedIn Reddit Bluesky Email Copy Link Link copied Add us as preferred source Comments

What we found (2)

The Daily Express reports Iranian officials' reactions to Trump's midterm losses, quoting Ghalibaf and Khamenei directly and attributing their claims to them. Its headline and opening call these statements 'brutal' mockery, a tabloid verdict the quotes only partly support. It also leaves out Trump's own Fox News remark tying the result to the Iran war's cost at the pump, which its sister article reported the same morning.

  1. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “brutally mocks”

    Why this matters
The Express calls Iranian officials' statements 'brutally' mocking in its own voice in the headline, a verdict word rather than a description.
    The impression it gives
A reader expects savage ridicule of Trump and reads the Iranian reaction as cruelty rather than as political comment and warning.
    The context
The quoted statements are a claim that voters rejected the war, a warning of a 'Nightmare' if the US ignores that, and a statement about American decline. These are political statements and a threat, not obviously 'brutal' mockery. The word adds colour the quotes do not carry.

    What is missing

The article quotes Trump's Fox News interview only for his surprise at the result. It omits his remark, reported by the Express an hour earlier, that voters 'weren't willing to do the short-term consequence of paying more for gasoline' from his Iran policy. Without it, the link between the losses and the Iran war appears only as Iran's taunt, when Trump himself drew that link.

What it gets right

  • “In a post on X, Mr Ghalibaf wrote:”

The Express names the speaker and the platform and gives his words as a direct quotation, so the reader can judge the statement for themselves.

  • “saying that the results prove Americans are opposed to his war on Iran”

The claim that the result reflects opposition to the war is clearly attributed to Ghalibaf rather than stated as the outlet's own conclusion.
