Chancellor John Healey has announced a new cost control framework, including a £100 "household energy payment" to people in council tax bands A to D. The move is forecast to help around 20 million households with their energy bills this winter. Mr Healey said: "I know that with the conflict in the Middle East , rising energy bills are a real worry. I know that people look to government at times like this, not to solve all their problems, but to give them a bit of breathing space.

The money will be paid directly into people's bank accounts. The scheme, which will be finded by hiking taxes on banks, will cost around £2.6billion and help "take pressure off" people with soaring bills over the upcoming winter months. It comes after independent energy consultancy Cornwall Insight predicted the Ofgem price cap for a typical dual-fuel household withh rise from £1,723 to £1,999 in January 2027.

Meanwhile, EDF Energy is forecasting a 27% jump that coukd push typical annual bills up to £2,192. For next year, fairer bills and for the long term radical reform of the energy market to produce cheaper power. Breathing space now, hope for the future delivered to the British people by this Labour government." Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT New energy bill support has been confirmed. On the household energy payment, Martin Lewis said on X: "£100 payment to all households in Council Tax bands A to D for England (and funding for same in other nations).

That's 20m homes. Translation: This is the support for the huge rise due in January price cap. Its expected to be 27% up. Which equates to roughly £100 from Jan to March alone." Standing charges on gas bills will be scrapped from next year for around 23 million homes, the Treasury has announced. The charges are a fixed daily fee added to bills, regardless of how much gas a customer uses, and cost around £108 per year for a typical household.

Mr Lewis spoke with the Chancellor on Wednesday morning, confirming that the gas standing charge will be scrapped in 2027. The financial guru believes this will make 60% of Brits better off. He explained: "The Chancellor also said he will be talking to [energy regulator] Ofgem about how they get rid of the Charge on electricity as well, but that is 'trickier' apparently and will take longer. The Chancellor has confirmed further energy bill help. (Image: Getty) "This is primarily about the Price Cap Standing Charges.

There will still be an open market, so other firms can offer other forms of prices with or without the Standing Charge. My suspicion is that once it goes on the Price Cap, it will tend to be reduced on other tariffs as well." He continued: "As for those on fixes: if you get a fix now, the rate of your fix is fixed, so this should not affect it. You will pay what you pay and if it has Standing Charges they will continue (some asking if they should delay fixing because of this; no, if a fix is right for you and will save you money, don't let this change that – this is about the structure of bills, as opposed to the actual costs on bills).

"About 60% of people will pay less due to this, 40% more. My guesstimate is the dividing line will be somewhere around 12,500 kilowatt hours of gas (can't know until there is actual pricing). According to a study by Nesta, this switch would leave the majority of people in all income groups under £100,000 better off." The Express reports the Chancellor's £100 household energy payment and the planned removal of gas standing charges, with bill forecasts attributed to Cornwall Insight and EDF. Its headline says households in general are handed £100, while the body limits the payment to council tax bands A to D. Otherwise the piece attributes its claims and reports who loses out as well as who gains.

“John Healey hands households £100 energy bill support payments”

    Why this matters
The words "hands households £100" present the payment as going to households in general and as already handed over.
    The impression it gives
A reader may think every household will get £100, and that the money has been paid.
    The context
The body says the payment is announced for this winter and goes only to people in council tax bands A to D, about 20 million households. Households in higher bands get nothing from it.
