US ambassador urges Israel to prosecute over ‘act of terror’ against American photographer

Findings are available in the analysis below.1 finding

- Huckabee, a staunch ally of Israel who has nonetheless sharply criticized settler attacks against Americans, did not identify the culprits as settlers, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to sow doubt as to their identity

- Netanyahu, who wants to shore up his pro-settlement right-wing base ahead of close-fought October 27 elections, on Friday insisted that Palestinians or “far-left” activists may have been responsible

JERUSALEM: US Ambassador Mike Huckabee on Saturday demanded that Israel prosecute and jail the assailants in a West Bank settler attack against a Washington Post journalist.

“Attacking a female photographer is a despicable act of terror carried out by masked cowards,” Huckabee wrote on X, taking a far stronger tone than an earlier statement from Washington.

Huckabee, a staunch ally of Israel who has nonetheless sharply criticized settler attacks against Americans, did not identify the culprits as settlers, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to sow doubt as to their identity.

“Details of who under investigation, but those who attacked unarmed reporter should spend (years) in prison,” Huckabee said.

“We have called for a full investigation, arrest, and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law to whoever participated in this.”

Heidi Levine, a veteran photographer, was taken to hospital with broken vertebrae. She was listed on Saturday as being in moderate condition.

She had been covering Palestinians’ annual harvest of olives, which has been repeatedly disrupted by Israeli settlers.

Settlers beat her and stole her passport, telephone, wallet and equipment, according to witnesses.

The article never says that the settlers also attacked the Palestinians harvesting olives alongside Levine. A reader comes away thinking the photographer was the only person assaulted, and the Palestinian victims of the same attack drop out of the story.

Arab News reports Mike Huckabee's call for Israel to prosecute and jail the people who beat Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine in the West Bank. It names Israeli settlers as the attackers on witnesses' word and says Netanyahu tried to sow doubt about who did it. It never says the settlers also attacked the Palestinian olive harvesters she was covering, so the Palestinian victims of the same attack drop out of the story.

What it gets right

  • “Settlers beat her and stole her passport, telephone, wallet and equipment, according to witnesses.”

It names the settlers as the actors in an active sentence and gives the witnesses as its source, rather than hiding who did it.

  • “after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to sow doubt as to their identity”

It calls Netanyahu's suggestion of other culprits an attempt to sow doubt, so his claim is not left standing as an equal explanation.

  • “Palestinians’ annual harvest of olives, which has been repeatedly disrupted by Israeli settlers”

It places the attack inside a repeated pattern of settler attacks on the harvest and names who carries them out.
