British PM condemns Green Party for ‘Zionism is racism’ motion, rules out partnership

Tap a highlight to see why it matters.3 findings

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Wednesday condemned the Green Party’s “Zionism is racism” motion and ruled out a future partnership with . Speaking in the House of Commons, the Labour prime minister said the motion “is wrong, it is antisemitic, and this side of the House will have nothing to do with it,” as he was asked if he would rule out cooperating with the Green Party following its “descent into the most abhorrent antisemitism.”

The Greens’ motion also called for the establishment of “a single democratic Palestinian state across all of historic Palestine” — . “We will always take the right response when it comes to any partnerships we have with other parties,” added Burnham, who has been sharply critical of Israel and whose government introduced broad sanctions against Israeli settlements last month. “We cannot support a partnership with a party that holds the position that has recently been adopted.”

Burham’s remarks came as Labour has been regaining in popularity among left-wing voters at the expense of the Green Party, whose leader Zach Polanski last week lost an election to Labour for a vacated parliamentary seat just days after the Zionism is Racism motion passed. The Times of Israel reports Andy Burnham's condemnation of the Green Party's Zionism motion accurately. In its own voice it adds that the motion means "eliminating Israel", wording that echoes Israel's Foreign Ministry, and it calls the Greens "the faction". It ends on the Foreign Ministry's charges and gives the Greens no voice.

  1. States one side's claim as fact

    Minor

    “thereby eliminating Israel”

    Why this matters
The outlet adds "thereby eliminating Israel" in its own voice after quoting the motion's call for a single democratic state.
    The impression it gives
A reader takes it as an established fact that the motion calls for Israel to be eliminated.
    The context
This is a party's interpretation. The article later attributes the same reading to Israel's Foreign Ministry, but here it appears unattributed as the outlet's own conclusion. The words of the motion quoted call for a single democratic state, not for elimination.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“meaning the destruction of the State of Israel”

  2. Gives a contested claim the last word

    Minor

“The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem had called on Labour and every other party in Britain to reject the resolution, which it said “legitimizes armed struggle, calls for a Palestinian state ‘from the river to the sea’ — meaning the destruction of the State of Israel — and labels as ‘racist’ the aspiration of the Jewish people for self-determination.””

    Why this matters
The outlet closes its report on the Israeli Foreign Ministry's charges against the motion and prints no response from the Green Party anywhere.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away thinking the Greens have offered no answer to the antisemitism charge and the Foreign Ministry's account stands uncontested.
    The context
The Green Party responded to the same events, saying Labour was conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism. Other outlets reported that reply.

  3. Uses a loaded word

    Minor

    “the faction”

    Why this matters
The outlet calls the Green Party "the faction" in its own voice.
    The impression it gives
A reader is nudged to see the Greens as a splinter group rather than a national party.
    The context
The article itself describes a party with a leader and lawmakers that contested a parliamentary seat.
