CENTCOM Chief Briefs Trump on Options for Bombing Iran

No framing issues found.

Adm. Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, visited the White House on Thursday to brief President Trump on military options for attacking Iran, The Wall Street Journal has reported. The meeting marks a rare in-person briefing between Trump and the CENTCOM chief, who is known to be supportive of restarting the bombing campaign. Reporting from Axios earlier this month described CENTCOM leadership and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth as the “strongest backers” of restarting major strikes against Iran.

Dan Caine, and other cabinet members, but it didn’t specify what type of options Cooper presented. Other reports have said the US and Israel are planning a joint attack that would involve major strikes targeting Iranian leadership and energy infrastructure.

Earlier this week, the Journal reported that the US was moving a Patriot missile system to Israel as part of its preparations for another round of strikes against Iran. Cooper reportedly spoke with IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir on Monday to coordinate ahead of the new attacks. All signs are pointing to another US-Israeli attack against Iran after the US midterm elections. For their part, Iranian leaders have warned that any further strikes against their country will lead to a significant escalation in Iranian retaliatory attacks across the region.

About this analysis

Antiwar.com reports that the head of US Central Command briefed President Trump at the White House on options for attacking Iran. It attributes each claim to The Wall Street Journal or Axios and names the US and Israel as the parties preparing strikes. It also gives Iran's warning of retaliation. Nothing in it misleads the reader.

What it gets right

  • “to brief President Trump on military options for attacking Iran, The Wall Street Journal has reported”

The article says plainly that the options are for attacking Iran. It attributes the report to its source rather than stating unseen details as its own fact.

  • “the US and Israel are planning a joint attack that would involve major strikes targeting Iranian leadership and energy infrastructure”

The article names who is planning the attack and what it would target, including civilian energy infrastructure. It uses active words, not a neutral euphemism.

  • “Iranian leaders have warned that any further strikes against their country will lead to a significant escalation in Iranian retaliatory attacks across the region”

The article gives Iran's own stated position. It does not let US officials fill the piece alone.
