Support us Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has described reports suggesting he "understood" why Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea as "utter b******s". Mr Farage, who unveiled military veteran Angus MacIntyre as Reform UK's armed forces spokesman yesterday, fired back after The Times highlighted comments made in 2022.

The Clacton MP was accused of saying President Putin acted because Crimea and territories in the Donbas were “Russian-speaking communities” and “would rather be part of a greater Russia than part of somewhere else”. Russian troops illegally annexed Crimea in 2014 and later invaded Ukraine in 2022. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say Speaking to journalists, Mr Farage said: "I never said anything of the kind. That is utter b******s." The Reform UK leader had claimed he admired President Putin, citing his ability as a "political operator".

However, pressure mounted on Mr Farage after Reform UK's ex-Wales leader Nathan Gill was jailed for accepting pro-Kremlin bribes. Distancing himself from the remarks, the Clacton MP added: "Let's be clear, these comments attributed to me about Putin are wrong. Nigel Farage alongside Angus MacIntyre | PA "I said in that first comment, I don't like him, I wouldn't live in Russia. He's a clever political operator. "It's almost as if you make any comment about an individual's ability and you're suddenly their biggest supporter.

Never been true." Mr Farage, who admitted he remains fearful of the EU and Nato expanding eastwards, warned President Putin now poses a huge threat to the UK. "I now think Putin poses a bigger threat to Western Europe and to us," Mr Farage said. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS Nigel Farage set to lead Brexit fightback with shock return to Brussels: 'I'm up for it!' Nigel Farage appoints veteran who braved 'most dangerous posting for soldiers' as his defence chief Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 | REUTERS The Reform UK leader is now hoping to set out his credentials as a supporter of Ukraine, with Mr MacIntyre pointing out Mr Farage would shoot down Russian aircraft invading Nato airspace. Mr MacIntyre said: "I think we focus on what's been said more recently, which is, if the UK was part of the UK coalition or an international coalition through Nato, then he's already said we would shoot down Russian aircraft."

However, Mr Farage's rivals have long accused the prominent Brexiteer of being soft on Russia. Ahead of Reform UK's armed forces announcement, Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge joked Mr Farage was awaiting "final clearance from the Kremlin". The Russian President poses a bigger threat than ever, Nigel Farage warned | REUTERS Chancellor John Healey accused the Clacton MP of being "unfit for any political office in our country" while he was Defence Secretary, adding: "He'd rather lick Vladimir Putin's boot than stand up for the people of Ukraine."

Meanwhile, ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson claimed Mr Farage was "parroting Putin's lies" ahead of the 2024 General Election. Andy Burnham, who refused to extend a G20 summit invitation to Moscow yesterday, renewed the row over Russia's role in the Brexit referendum last month. The Prime Minister claimed the "clear answer" was the Kremlin had interferred in the campaign. The Reform UK leader voiced fury at the remarks | PA He added: "I think we've been too much on the back foot on that actually and we haven't informed people sufficiently about the extent to which people are seeking to disrupt the political process from overseas."

However, Foreign Office Minister Stephen Doughty . Mr Doughty said: “I don’t think they’ve succeeded in their efforts to undermine our elections.” Mr Burnham is now looking to forge a new relationship with Europe and hopes the UK will rejoin in his lifetime. What we found (1)

GB News reports Nigel Farage's denial of a Times report about his 2022 remarks on Crimea and gives space to his rivals' charges that he is soft on Russia. In one passage it turns a minister's hedged opinion into its own statement that Russia failed to sway the Brexit result, and says he was "forced" to say it. Otherwise it attributes the contested claims to the people who made them.

  1. States one side's claim as fact

    Minor

“was forced to clarify Russia failed to sway the result”

    Why this matters
GB News writes "Russia failed to sway the result" in its own voice as something the minister "clarified", and adds "was forced to", which casts his words as a correction of the Prime Minister.
    The impression it gives
A reader comes away believing it is settled that Russian interference did not change the referendum outcome, and that the government had to walk back the Prime Minister's claim.
    The context
The quote the outlet itself prints is hedged. Mr Doughty says "I don't think" Russia succeeded, and he speaks of "our elections" in general, not the referendum result. Nothing in the article shows he was forced to say anything or that he contradicted the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister spoke of interference, not of the result being changed.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“in their efforts to undermine our elections”
    • Elsewhere in the article“the Kremlin had interferred in the campaign”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “Russian troops illegally annexed Crimea in 2014 and later invaded Ukraine in 2022.”

The outlet states the annexation and invasion plainly in its own voice and calls the annexation illegal, rather than treating it as a matter of perspective.

  • “would rather be part of a greater Russia than part of somewhere else”

Alongside Mr Farage's denial, the article prints the actual words he is accused of saying. Readers can judge the dispute for themselves.

  • “Nathan Gill was jailed for accepting pro-Kremlin bribes”

The article gives the concrete context for the pressure on Mr Farage rather than reporting his denial alone.
