Support us Labour is likely to reject drilling at the giant Rosebank oilfield after approving the smaller Jackdaw gas field, sources have claimed. After Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh made her long-awaited decision on drilling in the North Sea, insiders now say she is far less likely to approve of a second development. Ms Fahnbulleh told the Guardian, which first reported on her likely decision, that the same rationale behind approving Jackdaw did not apply to Rosebank, which her mentor Ed Miliband once described as "climate vandalism". She said: "One is a gasfield that caters for the domestic market, while the other is an oilfield that is mainly for export. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say "It is right that we judge each application in its own right, and it is absolutely critical that the decision is consistent with our climate obligations, our carbon budgets and the end destination we need to get to with the energy transition." Her decision may spark further tensions within Labour as John Healey told ITV he expected both "oil and gas" revenues to contribute a new energy health fund. Andy Burnham would be expected to make the final call if there is a conflict on the decision. One Labour source said the Energy Secretary was being pragmatic by approving Jackdaw but rejecting Rosebank, adding that she was "putting up a fight". Labour likely to reject drilling at Rosebank oilfield | PA Rosebank would emit around seven times the carbon of Jackdaw and Ms Fahnbulleh is said to believe it would not shore up energy security because the majority of oil would be exported. This comes as US President Donald Trump praised the decision to approve Jackdaw, hailing it as "great news for the wealth and prosperity of the United Kingdom, and the wonderful region of Aberdeen". He said in a post on Truth Social: "The UK has started drilling in the North Sea, one of the greatest and most prosperous areas of OIL in the World. "They should go FULL BLAST!!! This will make the U.K. very wealthy again. TAKE DOWN THE COSTLY AND RIDICULOUS WINDMILLS!" Speaking to GB News, the Tory MP urged Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh to "go much further" after giving Jackdaw the greenlight. He said: "It's good the Government finally listened, but of course we've wasted a couple of years in the meantime. But they should go a lot further, they should definitely be drilling for oil in the Rosebank field, and indeed allowing new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea more widely. "From a financial point of view, from an energy security point of view and even an environmental point of view, it is madness not to drill for oil and gas in the North Sea. "Miatta and her fanatical colleague Ed Miliband and the Labour Party more widely are completely wrong about this, and they are, frankly, a danger to our economy, and they're a danger to our energy security as well." Scotland Secretary Douglas Alexander has said he wants Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh to make the "right decision" on approving Rosebank. He told GB News: "She had to reach a judgment in the round about Jackdaw yesterday. She is, in the days, weeks, and months ahead going to have to come to a judgement in relation to Rosebank. So the process is the same, but they're different fields, and therefore there will be some different considerations." A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesman said: "This is speculation. As the energy secretary has said, each project will be assessed on its own merits."
