Support us Kiran Kaur, whose son murdered 18-year-old Southampton University student Henry Nowak, is set to walk free from prison having served less than half of her three years behind bars. Kaur received the sentence for disposing of the weapon used to kill Mr Nowak in the aftermath of the crime. She will reportedly be released under Labour's early release programme, with her freedom expected to coincide roughly with the first anniversary of Mr Nowak's death on December 3 last year. The Indian national was also handed a Deportation Liability Notice at Bronzefield Prison, where she is serving three years for assisting an offender, according to the Sun. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say The mother of five could be removed to India by the end of the year, when she is said to serve a third of her jail term. Both Kaur and her son had entered not guilty pleas at trial. Mr Nowak was walking home following a night out when he was killed on December 3. His murderer, 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, was found guilty and handed a life sentence carrying a minimum term of 21 years. Kiran Kaur was found guilty at Southampton Crown Court | PA During the trial, Digwa had falsely alleged that Mr Nowak had subjected him to a racially motivated assault. The jury rejected this claim. The conviction and sentencing came despite both Digwa and Kaur maintaining their innocence throughout the proceedings, with each pleading not guilty to the charges they faced. Despite being due for early release, Kaur is also challenging her sentence in court. She is scheduled to appear before the Court of Appeal on November 5, less than a month before her anticipated release date, according to ITV. On that same day, Digwa will contest his sentence, arguing it is too harsh. Henry Nowak was stabbed to death on the walk home from a night out with friends | HANDOUT The Attorney General, however, is also seeking to increase the sentence on the grounds that it is unduly lenient. Digwa is additionally pursuing a separate legal challenge, seeking permission to appeal against his murder conviction. As an Indian national, Kaur may also face deportation, though no decision on removing her from the UK has yet been made. The early release scheme, which took effect on October 1 after a September delay to allow for a review, was designed to ease overcrowding in prisons across England and Wales. It has drawn significant criticism from the families of victims and those affected by crime. Ministers reduced the number of prisoners eligible from an initial 6,000 to approximately 5,000 by excluding rapists and the most serious child sex offenders from the programme. The incident took place on December 3 on Belmont Road, when Mr Nowak was walking home from a night out with his football team | CPS Releases are being staggered over the coming year. This week, the scheme freed up to 650 inmates in its second wave, with some having completed only a third of their sentences. Around 700 had already been released less than a fortnight earlier. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage took to social media to react to the news, writing: "The mother of Henry Nowak’s murderer is set to be released early this December thanks to Labour. "That would be 1/3rd of the way through her sentence. This is an insult to decency. She disposed of the murder weapon. She should serve her sentence in full and then be deported." A Home Office spokesman said: "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Henry Nowak, whose life was cruelly cut short in a horrific act of violence. "We will always seek to deport foreign criminals at the first opportunity." GB News has approached the MoJ for comment.
