Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: “Millions of people use their own car or van simply to get their job done. “It might sound like a small change, but those small things add up. This will include self-employed dads and partners who have previously missed out giving them the allowance for two weeks to spend more time with their child.

Ministers will also end the Carer’s Allowance cliff edge so unpaid carers don’t lose their whole allowance for earning just over the weekly earnings limit. New rules will mean that only £1 of support will taper away for every extra £1 earned meaning they won’t pay a financial penalty for working more hours or getting a pay rise. Import tariffs will also be removed from more than 100 products in a bid to bring down costs on family favourites such as baked beans, chocolate and gherkins.

What we found (1)

The Sun reports the Budget's rise in tax-free mileage rates, wider paternity pay, changes to Carer's Allowance and tariff cuts, and it gives the rates and savings plainly. Its headline calls the mileage change a huge boost, although the article's own figures put it at around £120 to £300 a year and the minister quoted calls it a small change. Nothing else in it misleads.

  1. Headline goes beyond the article

    Minor

    “Huge Budget boost”

    Why this matters
The headline calls the mileage change a "Huge Budget boost" in The Sun's own voice.
    The impression it gives
A reader expects a large sum of money for van drivers and other workers who drive for their job.
    The context
The body puts the gain at around £120 a year for 6,000 business miles and up to £300 for 15,000 miles. The Business Secretary quoted in the article himself calls it a small change.

    How we know

    • Elsewhere in the article“around £120 a year in additional tax savings”
    • Elsewhere in the article“It might sound like a small change”

    Show it in the article

What it gets right

  • “Ministers have billed the help as part of their plan for “everyday fixes””

The Sun attributes the government's slogan to ministers and does not adopt it as its own description.

  • “around £120 a year in additional tax savings for those workers clocking up around 6,000 business miles”

It gives the saving with its base, so a reader can see how large the gain really is.

  • “He will make permanent the 55p per mile rate for the first 10,000 miles with each mile after increasing from 25p to 35p.”

It sets out the exact old and new rates and does not leave the reader with only a slogan.
