Storm Boelo brings flooding and cancelled flights Image caption, Passengers were left stranded at Leeds Bradford Airport on Sunday as flights were cancelled By Richard Baker Yorkshire Published 1 hour ago Storm Boelo has brought strong winds, flooding and travel disruption to Yorkshire. A yellow weather alert for wind remains in place until 21:00 GMT. Thousands of homes are still without power, while Leeds Bradford Airport - the UK's highest commercial airport - cancelled several flights on Sunday and diverted many more. It has been a similar picture across the UK. One man died in Scotland and there has been widespread travel disruption, with gusts of up to 85mph (137 km/h) in exposed areas. Stormy weather arrived in the region on Friday and persisted through the weekend. In Scarborough, Boston, 17, was driving home from Manchester Airport on Friday when his car ran into trouble amid hail, thunder and lightning. He said: "No one expected it. Suddenly, we've got people in 2ft of water. There were no flood warnings, it came out of nowhere. "There were quite a few cars with hazards on. We've not really had anything like this for years. We don't usually get floods like this." Image source, EPA Image caption, Gusts of up to 85mph (137 km/h) hit exposed areas on Sunday On Saturday, also in Scarborough, a tree fell on a bungalow. No injuries were reported. In Hawes, a person was walked to safety by firefighters after becoming trapped in their vehicle after attempting to drive through floodwater. On Sunday, the A169 between Malton and Pickering was closed due to a fallen tree blocking the road, while in Stokesley, on the edge of the North York Moors, a tree crashed onto an unoccupied car. Attractions were also affected by the weather, including Fountains Abbey, the UK's largest monastic ruin, near Ripon, which was closed on Sunday. The storm resulted in 36 flights to and from Leeds Bradford being cancelled on Sunday. Bosses told those still due to fly to check the website being turning up. "We'd like to thank all customers for their patience and understanding while our teams work through these challenging conditions," an LBA spokesperson said. In Huddersfield, a tree fell on a car at about midday on Sunday. Photographer Jim Mitcham told the BBC that "everyone was shaken but unhurt". In a statement, Kirklees Council said staff were working to clear the roads and did not rule out the possibility of temporarily closing roads while issues remain. At 17:00 GMT, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said it was dealing with reports of a loose panel at Sharman Court student halls in Sheffield. Northern Powergrid said about 93,000 customers had been affected by outages. "We have restored supplies to almost 51,000 customers by reconfiguring our network, leaving around 42,000 customers currently without power," said a spokesperson. Some customers would remain without power into the night, they warned.
