Analyst: War will significantly diminish US influence as Iran holds control over Strait of Hormuz

International affairs analyst Gilbert Doctorow in an interview said that the war will significantly diminish US influence in the region, while Iran retains control over the Strait of Hormuz despite Washington’s latest attacks. Doctorow said the war would likely reshape regional security arrangements and lead to a withdrawal or significant reduction of the US military and political presence in the region. “It is perfectly clear that one result is coming, and that is the withdrawal of American presence or certainly the reduction of American influence in the region,” he said. The analyst said the destruction of US military bases in the Persian Gulf had been extensive and would cost billions of dollars to repair or replace, adding that some facilities may never be restored. “The Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz remains intact,” Doctorow said, pointing to the destruction of an oil tanker that he said had violated Iranian rules as evidence of Iran’s continued ability to enforce its regulations in the strategic waterway.
