Things got heated on Good Morning Britain as Kemi Badenoch was repeatedly asked the same question. On Thursday's instalment of the ITV show (October 29), presenters Paul Brand and Ranvir Singh spoke to Kemi Badenoch to get her thoughts on John Healey's recent budget announcement. However, things quickly took a turn as Brand questioned Badenoch on whether or not she'd consider returning to the EU, following Andy Burnham recently stating he'd like to rejoin within his lifetime.

Brand asked: "Just returning to Brexit for a moment because Andy Burnham says that is one of the reasons why our economy is weaker, in his view. Would you ever countenance rejoining the EU?" As she quickly answered no, Brand interrupted her asking: "Never? Can I be clear, though, never?" Badenoch replied: "We are not going back into the EU. I cannot believe that we're even having this discussion." However, the GMB star interrupted the MP as he continued to ask if she was completely dismissing the prospect of ever rejoining the EU.

She continued: "We had this…" Interjecting, Brand asked again: "Kemi Badenoch, you're not saying never, are you? Can you just be really clear with me, ever?" She replied: "I have been really clear, you're asking me to repeat myself. I've already been clear. "The fact is, we had lots of people say, 'Once we leave the EU, all the problems will be solved'. We're doing it again, 'Once we join the EU, everything will be fine'. We have problems that we can fix now.

We can do a lot. We need to cut our welfare budget. We don't need to join the EU to do those things. There's a lot that we can do." She added: "What we see is politicians that don't have any answers start talking about, 'Let's join, let's leave, let's join' as if that's going to fix this." Although the ITV presenter wasn't backing down from his question, as he asked once again if she would admit to "never ever" rejoining the EU. Badenoch replied: "I literally said it, Paul, I literally said it.

We are not going back into the EU. I know you're looking for…" Ensure our latest TV stories always appear at the top of your Google Search by making us a Preferred Source. She replied: "I wasn't an MP when we left the European Union , I know what you're trying to do, but the fact is your viewers are out there, they're watching and thinking, 'How am I going to pay my energy bills , am I going to get a job?

"This political class conversation about rejoining the EU, which Andy Burnham is starting, is completely ridiculous. It is a waste of time, he thinks it's going to be helpful because all he cares about is an election." Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am.

The Mirror reports a Good Morning Britain interview in which Paul Brand pressed Kemi Badenoch again and again on whether she would ever back rejoining the EU. The Mirror quotes Brand and Badenoch at length. Its headline tells readers that Badenoch shut the host down. Its own report says the opposite: Brand kept asking and spoke over her. Apart from that headline, the Mirror does not mislead its readers.

“GMB host shut down by Kemi Badenoch”

    Why this matters
The words "shut down" tell the reader that Badenoch ended the line of questioning and silenced Brand.
    The impression it gives
A reader expects an exchange in which the host was stopped and dropped his question.
    The context
The Mirror's own body says the opposite. Brand kept returning to the question and was still speaking over Badenoch at the end of the passage it reports. The headline's verdict is not supported by the story underneath it.

What it gets right

  • “presenters Paul Brand and Ranvir Singh spoke to Kemi Badenoch to get her thoughts on John Healey's recent budget announcement”

The Mirror names the programme, the date, both presenters and the subject of the interview, so the reader knows exactly what is being reported.

  • “This political class conversation about rejoining the EU, which Andy Burnham is starting, is completely ridiculous.”

Badenoch's attack on Burnham is kept inside her quotation and attributed to her, not adopted in the outlet's own voice.
